Yesterday, I had the privilege and honor of acting as the moderator of an important roundtable discussion involving top school administrators and Directors from Community Colleges from throughout the state who have Health Information Technology Certification and Degree programs; and, Health Technology Industry Leaders and decision makers. The theme of the day was, "Educational Transformation for our Workforce and Local Economy. The goal was to create a space where they could discuss and outline alliances and understanding around how students can be adequately prepared and qualified to fill various high quality career positions in HIM (Health Information Management) and HIT (Health Information Technology). The colleges were ask questions around specific programs they offer; degrees and certifications and awards offered; accreditation body of their programs; internship/job placement opportunities/; and partnerships they have forged. The industry representatives addressed common job titles and required skills for each position within their organizations; minimum and desired requirements for these positions; what prior industry experience are they seeking in these employment positions; and, their employment projections for five and ten years. In small groups table discussions address and reported back to the entire body the following issues: what role could industry/community colleges play in helping prepare HIT/HIM workforce; what may impede their ability to support HIT and HIM programs; how can industry and community colleges align to the skills we previously discussed during the day; and, what courses/training could be presented at the high school level?

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has said, “The president and I believe that high-quality CTE programs are a vital strategy for helping our diverse students complete their secondary and postsecondary studies.” He acknowledged that those on a CTE track are helping our nation meet our economic and workforce challenges. “In fact, by implementing dual enrollment and early college models, a growing number of CTE pathways are helping students to fast-track their college degrees.”

In addition, the study also found that nearly a third of senior leaders — both male and female — who work in science, engineering and technology fields reported that a woman would never reach the top position in their company. “Even the senior guys who are in a position to make change for the women in their company don’t feel like they can do it,” says Laura Sherbin, the director of research for CTI. When that’s the case, she asks, “what’s left?”

A new study examines how gender bias plays out in these fields.
