⛔️HOW DO 911 WRECKER CALLS REALLY WORK? ⛔️

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear at Bubba’s Towing & Recovery is:

“The police pay you to come clean up wrecks they call you out to.”

That’s simply not how it works.

We wanted to take a moment to help educate the public on how police call-outs and 911 towing actually work.

When there’s an accident, law enforcement’s first priority is protecting lives and securing the scene. Once that’s done, if the vehicle owner doesn’t have a preferred towing company or isn’t able to choose one, the officer will contact a towing company from the local rotation list.

Being on that rotation list does not mean we receive a salary or government funding. It simply means we’re available to respond when called.

From that point on, the towing company is responsible for handling the recovery. Depending on the crash, that can involve:

🚧 Recovering heavily damaged vehicles
🚛 Operating specialized wreckers and recovery equipment
🧹 Cleaning debris from the roadway
🛢️ Handling fluids and environmental cleanup when needed
🚦 Working in dangerous traffic conditions to reopen the road as quickly and safely as possible

All of that equipment, manpower, fuel, labor, and time is provided by the towing company—not the government.

So who pays?

In most cases, payment is the responsibility of the vehicle owner, their insurance company, or the company that owns the vehicle involved. Unfortunately, not every vehicle is insured, and not every bill gets paid. Sometimes recovery companies spend thousands of dollars responding to a major crash with no guarantee they’ll ever recover those costs.

Our job isn’t just towing vehicles. It’s helping law enforcement clear roadways, assisting people during some of the worst moments of their lives, and getting traffic moving safely again for everyone else.

The next time you see a crash scene being cleared, remember that a local towing and recovery company has answered the call—often in the middle of the night, in bad weather, or in dangerous conditions—and they’re doing it with no guarantee of payment.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of one of our very own Randy Kuntsman.

For over 20+ years, Randy was a tow truck operator here at Jude’s Auto Repair and Towing, he was not only a friend/coworker, but he was also family. His dedication, hard work, and loyalty helped build our company into what it is today. Through long days, late nights, and countless calls, he showed up with strength, compassion, and a willingness to help anyone in need.

He touched so many lives, not only through his work but through his kindness, humor, and the relationships he built over the years. He will be deeply missed by all of us – our team, our customers, and this entire community.

We are grateful for the 20+ years we were blessed to work alongside him and for the memories we will carry forever.

Please keep his family, friends, and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Randy. Thank you for everything. You will NEVER be forgotten.

Immediate opening for experienced rollback operator. 1st shift and on call to be discussed. Hours and pay (hourly) to be negotiated. (Full time)

Ideal candidate can operate rollbacks hauling 2 cars, experience in roadside, copart, private property impounds, and police rotation.

This is not bankers hours. This is not just an operator position. This job requires some long days, weekends, on call, waking up in the middle of the night, etc. If you are just an operator and not dedicated to the job then this is not for you.

Requirements.
21 yrs or older
Clean MVR
Obtain a DOT physical
Experience with towing, jump starts, lockouts, and recovery
Ability to pass background and drug test
Ability to work in all elements
Ability to make logical problem solving decisions
Must be clean and professional as this position is the face of our company.

Pay to be discussed (hourly with overtime after 40)

With the forecast of a major winter storm we would like to remind everyone to stay home. Enjoy some family time while the road crews do their job. Our trucks will not run unless it is an absolute emergency. First responders, medical personnel, caretakers, etc. feel free to call and we will make our best attempt to get you to where you need to be. With the incoming weather system we highly encourage you to refrain from travel. With the newest weather update 4-8” of snow is expected throughout Today. If you must travel please be certain to give extra time and distance. Be sure to pack a flashlight, water, and extra clothing in the event you get stranded. While our trucks are stocked and ready to roll we also will be limited on what we can do during the event. We will operate on an emergency only basis for vehicles blocking lanes of traffic. If your vehicle becomes disabled or stuck feel free to contact us but keep in mind we can not risk our safety and equipment if not necessary. Please be safe and stay put if possible.

Most folks figure towing is simple. Hook-N-Haulin, done. They never see the part that happens before anyone else shows up.

It’s not the cables or the gear that stay with you. It’s the moments you carry long after the scene is cleared.

Like the night you eased up to a flipped SUV, its frame crushed into the pavement. You already knew, before you even stepped out, that it was too quiet. Turning that vehicle upright was work your hands understood, but the silence inside it… that’s something you never get used to.
There’s a person still in there. Someone who didn’t make it home. You treat that moment with care because it matters, even if no one else sees you do it.

And then there are the calls where someone is alive, barely, calling for help through broken glass. Snow blowing sideways. No sirens yet. No cameras. Just you, doing what you can until EMS arrives.
You talk to them. You hold their head so their airway stays open. You check a pulse with hands that learned long ago how to work through fear.

People think you get used to seeing death.
You don’t. What happens is it settles into you, becomes a familiar weight. You learn to keep moving, but you don’t forget the faces or the way the air felt in those moments. Some accidents stay with you for good.

Drivers pass by thinking you’re just clearing a wreck. They don’t see you sit in the truck afterward, staring at your gloves because you’re not ready to take them off yet.

There’s no credit for this part.
No pat on the back. You finish the call, clean up your tools, and head out again because someone else is waiting.

And sometimes, the call that breaks you is the one where it isn’t a stranger.
It’s someone from your own industry.
Someone who wore the same boots, ran the same roads, answered the same late night dispatch. Those losses hit the hardest. They remind you how thin the line really is out here.

That’s why every added precaution matters. Every layer of protection counts.
In Kentucky, we need every measure we can get to keep the people working on these highways alive while they help others in their worst moments.

Troy’s Law is one more layer.
One more chance to protect the men and women who stand between danger and the rest of the world.

This is tow work.
Quiet. Unseen.
And it deserves every safeguard we can give it.

The mother crying beside her wrecked car, worried how she’ll get her child from school…

The man who keeps staring at his destroyed vehicle like he’s watching a piece of his life disappear…

The families standing on the roadside under the hot sun, shocked and silent…
