🌾 A little extra dry matter for the herd! 🐄

Even though the cattle are enjoying the green pasture, we moved a round bale of our grass, alfalfa and clover hay into the pasture today. It gives them access to some additional dry matter and fiber while they continue grazing the lush summer forage.

The cattle can choose what they need as they move between fresh pasture and the hay.

🐄 A quick Farm Fresh update: We are now sold out of Berkshire pork for 2026, but we still have 1½ Angus beef available for fall processing.

After staying comfortable in the barn during last week’s heat wave, they’re once again enjoying our rotationally grazed pastures filled with grasses, clover, and alfalfa.

Second cutting is underway! 🌾

Considering the stretch of intense heat and dry weather we’ve had, we’re really pleased with how this crop turned out. Good hay starts with healthy fields, and quality forage helps produce healthy cattle.

With this week’s heat wave and warm overnight temperatures, our cattle have full access to the barn so they can get out of the sun whenever they choose. 🐄☀️

Built in the early 1900s, our old stone barn stays remarkably cool, with its thick stone walls helping provide a comfortable refuge from the summer heat.

The cattle have plenty of fresh, cool water, fans to keep the air moving, quality hay, and shade available around the clock. It’s especially important this week for the five cows and heifers we bred through artificial insemination on June 19, as minimizing heat stress supports their comfort during the early stages following breeding.

Keeping our animals healthy and comfortable is always our top priority.

A little pasture management at Farm Fresh today! 🚜🐄

After the cattle graze a paddock, we occasionally clip the remaining mature grasses and seed heads to encourage tender regrowth and improve forage quality for future grazing.

One of the neat things about mowing is watching the birds swoop in behind the brush hog to feast on insects stirred up by the cutting process.

Our pastures are a mix of grasses, clover, and alfalfa that provide natural nutrition for our cattle throughout the grazing season.

And yes, while mowing today I was listening to Wilde & Tausch on ESPN Milwaukee discuss the Giannis trade to Miami. Plenty to think about while managing pastures and keeping the cattle fed!

🌱🐄 Healthy pastures = healthy cattle.
