Happy National 5•29 Day! 🎓
Saving for a child or grandchild’s future education is one of those goals that can feel overwhelming at first but small steps over time can make a big impact. That’s why today (5/29!) is all about bringing awareness to 529 plans and the flexibility they can offer families.
A few things many people don’t realize can qualify for tax-free 529 withdrawals:
💰 Tuition & fees
📚 Books & supplies
🏘️ Room & board (within limits)
🖥️ Apprenticeship programs
🎒 K–12 tuition (up to $10k/year)
💸 Student loan repayment for beneficiaries and siblings (up to lifetime limits)
One of the biggest updates in recent years came through SECURE 2.0 legislation, which allows unused 529 funds to potentially be rolled into a Roth IRA for the beneficiary, subject to certain rules and limits.
This added flexibility has been a meaningful change for families who worry about “what if the money doesn’t get used for college?” It can also help give younger generations an early start toward long-term financial goals.
As always, every family’s situation is different, but it’s encouraging to see more options available when it comes to saving for education and beyond.
