Growthstream Leadership Tips

Quick, practical advice to help you and your team succeed.

Why generational conflict is easier to fix than you think.

You have probably seen this one.

A manager sends a short message asking for a status update. The reply comes back two words long.

The manager reads it as dismissive. The person who sent it thought they were being efficient.

Neither one says anything. A small piece of goodwill quietly disappears.

Nobody was rude. They were working from different assumptions about what a good response looks like.

That usually gets explained the same way. He's old school. She's a younger generation. That's just how they are.

Here's another way to look at it

What looks like a generational conflict is usually a clash of unspoken expectations.

Once you start watching for it, you see it everywhere:

One person believes a decision isn't final until it's in writing. Another believes it's final once it was said in the meeting.
One reads silence as agreement. Another reads silence as a problem nobody wants to name.
One thinks a quick text at 8pm is helpful. Another thinks it's an intrusion.
One gives feedback quarterly, when it's warranted. Another expects it weekly, to know where they stand.
None of those are character flaws. They're defaults, picked up long before anyone got to your team. From the last boss they had. From the industry they came out of. Sometimes from the era they came up in.

Generational patterns are real enough to be worth knowing. They just make a poor diagnosis for the specific person in front of you. Two people the same age on your team probably want to be led differently from each other.

Try this

Most of these expectations have never been said out loud, because everyone assumes theirs is the obvious one. So ask. Three questions surface most of it:

How do you prefer to get feedback, and how often?
When something is urgent, what's the fastest way to reach you?
What does a good update look like, from you and from me?
Fifteen minutes per person, once. Write the answers down and actually use them.

The point

The goal isn't to get every generation working the same way. It's to get everyone working from the same expectations.

If you only do one thing with this, take it to your next team meeting. Ask everyone the same question and go around the room:

What's one thing that would make it easier to work with me?

Then be quiet and let people answer.

Until next time, here's to your success,

Charles

PS. Most of what gets blamed on personality or generation traces back to one of five areas: trust, communication, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and results. Growthstream builds those into managers a little at a time, month after month, which is why it sticks when a one day workshop doesn't. If you want to see where your team's gaps are, our five minute assessment will show you. Check it out on our site.
