PEST OF THE WEEK

This week we will focus on Mosquitoes. There are about 170 different kinds of mosquitoes in North America alone. These pests are part of the same family as houseflies and fruit flies, because they all have two clear, veined wings.

Best known as a summer pest, Mosquitoes can develop from egg to adult in 10 to 14 days.

Mosquitoes are vectors of numerous diseases including malaria, yellow fever, dengue, encephalitis, Chikungunya, West Nile virus and Zika – the newest mosquito-borne disease of growing concern.

Wearing an insect repellent containing DEET or another EPA-registered ingredient is the best way to prevent mosquito bites. It’s also important to take steps to prevent mosquito breeding grounds around your home, since mosquitoes can lay eggs in as little as a half an inch of water.

Why are some people more attractive to mosquitoes than others? Check out this short video to see why. https://youtu.be/waw7PcWCCUc

PEST OF THE WEEK

We are going back to the very first PEST OF THE WEEK to revisit the odorous house ant. Typically living for several years, these ants commonly make their homes in exposed soil, under stones, logs, mulch, debris and other items. They will also nest in wall and floor cracks.

We have had a lot of questions this week on ants and this is just one of many species that can invade your home. Here is a good video regarding the odorous house ant https://youtu.be/hn-C30X2gGE.

PEST OF THE WEEK

I had several questions this week regarding Stink Bugs making this a perfect pest of the week.

Stink Bugs

Originally found in East Asia, stink bugs were not even reported in the United States until the late 1990’s! They get their name from an unpleasant odor released when you crush them or when they are protecting their homes.

Visit http://www.pestworld.org/pest-guide/occasional-invaders/stink-bugs/ for prevention tips and more than you will ever want to know about Stink Bugs!!

PEST OF THE WEEK

Carpenter Bees

Carpenter bees bore through soft woods to lay eggs and protect their larvae as they develop. Female carpenter bees will chew a tunnel into a piece of wood to build a nest gallery. The bits of wood she chews and deposits outside the nest are called "frass". The tunnel openings usually look about one or two inches deep, but they can be up to 10 feet long! These tunnels usually have several rooms where the bees hold their eggs and food.

PEST OF THE WEEK:

Fleas

Fleas transport themselves on rodents and other mammals, and usually remain on their hosts at all times. They infest both household pets and wild animals like opossums, raccoons and skunks. Fleas use their powerful legs to jump as high as 8 inches vertically and 16 inches horizontally. They can also be found on shoes, pant legs or blankets, which can transfer the fleas to new environments.

Subterranean Termites

Subterranean termite colonies can have up to 2 million members! Their colonies are divided into three groups: workers, soldiers and reproductives.

Subterranean termites are the most destructive kind of termite. They can eat a lot of wood and they can cause a lot of expensive damage to a house! They can destroy building foundations, wooden support beams, plastic plumbing pipes, sub-flooring, insulation … even swimming pool liners and filtration systems! Termites can also injure or destroy living trees and shrubs.

German Cockroach

German cockroaches live in warm and damp places, like kitchens, bathrooms, and places where people eat and drink.

Cockroaches crawl through dirty areas and then walk around our homes tracking in lots of bacteria and germs. They can contaminate food by shedding their skins. Their cast off skin and waste byproducts are allergens that can trigger allergic reactions, asthma and other illnesses, especially in children.

Odorous House Ants

This ant gets its name from the strong, rotten coconut-like smells it gives off when crushed and the fact that they commonly nest in or around houses. Native to the United States, these ants are very social, living in colonies of up to 100,000 members.
