Colorimetric drug field tests have documented false positive rates ranging from 15% to over 91%.

NIRLab identifies substances based on their spectroscopic signature—validated against 40,000+ GC-MS reference compounds many by an ISO 17025-accredited lab.

That is the difference between chemistry that reacts to structural similarity and identification that is traceable to a forensic laboratory standard.

Drug checking is increasingly becoming part of the global conversation around drug safety and harm reduction.

New South Wales, Australia, recently announced that it will continue drug checking at up to 15 music festivals each year following a 12-month trial. Nearly 1,500 samples were analyzed, with unexpected substances identified in 8% of samples and high-dose M**A found in more than 4% of the M**A tablets and capsules tested.

The approach may be different from country to country, but the underlying challenge is the same: knowing what a substance actually is matters.

As the illicit drug supply becomes more unpredictable, rapid chemical identification and quantitative information can help reduce uncertainty at the point of need. And when those individual results are connected, they can also provide a clearer picture of what drugs are circulating, where they are appearing, and how the market is changing.

At 908 Devices, we build technologies like NIRLab to put that information closer to the people who need to make decisions, whether the mission is drug enforcement, public safety, public health, or harm reduction.

There are conferences you attend. And there are communities you become part of.

908 Devices was proud to be in Buenos Aires for IDEC 2026, supporting the international drug enforcement community alongside leaders and agencies from around the world. For some of us at 908, IDEC has been part of our professional lives for more than 20 years. We keep coming back for the same reason: the relationships built here matter. The people you meet at IDEC often become colleagues, partners, and friends for decades. Different countries, different agencies, different challenges—but a shared commitment to protecting communities from the evolving threat of illicit drugs.

Technology has changed considerably over those 20 years. The importance of trusted relationships across borders has not.

Thank you to the DEA, our hosts in Argentina, and everyone who spent time with the 908 Devices team this year.

K2/spice is creating a growing challenge inside correctional facilities. It's cheap, unpredictable, and increasingly disguised on everyday paper, making it difficult to catch through visual inspection or traditional screening methods.

Our latest blog explores why synthetic cannabinoids are such a persistent contraband threat and how trace detection with MX908 can help corrections teams identify these substances at the point of entry, before they circulate through a facility.

We’re proud to celebrate 908 Devices' scientific co-founder Dr. J. Michael Ramsey on receiving the 2026 Philip J. Wyatt Award in Analytical Chemistry from the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry.

A pioneer in microfluidics, micro- and nanofabrication, analytical chemistry, and bioinstrumentation, Michael has spent his career advancing technologies that address critical challenges in chemical analysis and translating scientific innovation into real-world impact.

That spirit of innovation is deeply rooted in the foundation of 908 Devices and continues to inspire our mission today.

Congratulations, Michael, on this well-deserved recognition!

Unknown powder. Suspicious shipment. Unclear contents.

At ports of entry and border checkpoints, waiting for answers can slow operations. VipIR combines FTIR and Raman spectroscopy in one portable system, giving teams complementary chemical identification capabilities at the point of need.

More confidence in the identification means more informed decisions about what happens next.

That counterfeit pill? It might be fentanyl. Or carfentanil. Or a synthetic you've never heard of.

MX908 identifies it in minutes, including compounds that don't exist in standard libraries yet.

Field intelligence that advances the case.

Successfully, used daily by Federal, State and Local Law Enforcement.
