Have you looked at your “hunched shoulder” barometer lately?

Do you look up from your day-to-day work of number crunching and emails and meetings and phone calls to walk through your organization and take notice?

Sometimes the best way to evaluate culture - or overall employee morale - is to just take the time to immerse yourself in it. Walk around. Have conversations. Ask questions. Notice the overall “feel” in meetings and at the desks/cubicles.

When you do this consistently, you are going to notice where the hunched shoulders are.

The person who won’t interact with the people around her. The person who doesn’t initiate conversation at the coffee machine. The person who is slumped in his chair. The person who doesn’t participate in meetings.

Sometimes we blame this person for simply being “unmotivated.”
But good leaders will take the time to see if there’s something they can do to help.

And when you see someone struggling more often than not, it’s not time to assume why, it’s time to care enough to start to take the steps to figure out what it could be, and how YOU as a leader can help.
— Is this person not being led well?
— Is this person in the wrong role?
— Is this person simply sitting next to the wrong people?
— Is this person unsure of her own goals or purpose within the business?
— Is this person struggling personally?
— Is this person feeling under-appreciated?
— What else could it be?

Sure, we can all have empathy that sometimes people have bad days.

But when we take the time to take notice every day, we can see if something is more of a trend — whether it’s for one person, a whole department, or the entire company — and start to do something about it.

We want to know from you — as a leader — what would YOUR next-steps approach be if you noticed a trend of hunched shoulders?

Consistency breeds success.
Period.

In the business world, things are constantly changing. And it’s the business owners and executives that hold on to the things they CAN control that are able to navigate the boat through the varying wave heights. How do they do it? Through things like…

--Consistent learning: Whether it’s reading books, attending seminars, finding mentors or setting time in their calendars for doing research — consistent, lifelong learners will always be moving themselves forward — or preparing themselves to be better — when business roadblocks and changes come in.

--Consistent communication: With team members, with the leadership team, with their clients, with their social media audience — those who keep the lines of communication open will be able to maintain relationships, identify pain points and rally the team to achieve the leader’s vision of success.

--Consistent evaluating: Business owners who are always looking at the industry landscape, always looking into internal processes, always looking at customer feedback or scanning the office to determine if morale is up or down —they are the ones who are always choosing to “look up” from the day to day work and are able to move quickly to seize opportunity.

We want to know - as a business owner, entrepreneur or executive looking to take positive steps toward what success means for you in 2023 … how would you rate your consistency on a scale of 1-10? Where do you want to become more consistent?

We see you.

The one knowing that 2023 is on the horizon and KNOWING that you should set goals.

But you? You’ve never been great at goals.

Maybe you don’t know where to start. Or maybe you’re not setting them because you’re afraid of how it might feel to not reach them. Or maybe you're not clear on what your vision is so you can’t really set a goal around it.

We get it.
Not everyone is an expert goal-setter.
But just because you’re not an expert, doesn’t mean you should skip this part.

We want to help.

Whether it’s walking you through the “how” or helping understand what’s kept you from doing it in the past and figuring out the best next steps to help you get past it - let’s work together.

Don’t let this be another year when you “wing it.”

Let’s make 2023 the year you get intentional about your success.

When you think back on your leadership career… what are the moments you remember most?

Was it the moment you landed your first job in a leadership role? Maybe you were promoted to a manager or director - or maybe put in charge of an important internal company program?

Was it one of the first times you questioned your ability to lead? You worked for hours ahead of the meeting to develop an agenda, anticipate your team’s needs and deliver strong messages, but the look on your team’s faces told you it didn’t resonate?

Or was it the first time you felt like you nailed the meeting? Did you stand in the conference room for a few minutes after your team left to marinate in the positive energy that had just filled the room?

Or was it the way you handled the first time someone on your team quit? Maybe you realized you could have done more, or maybe you used the lessons in the experience to find areas in your company’s culture where you could make people feel more valued?

Or was it the time a new employee wrote you a handwritten card thanking you for investing time in helping them feel comfortable in the company and empowered to do their job well?

Or do you remember the time you brought “the” idea to the leadership meeting that changed the way the company looked at one of their internal processes for the better?

Leadership is a journey.
And for the great leaders, all of these experiences serve a purpose.

They allow us a chance to recognize where we need to grow. They help us experience things in a way that will allow us to support and mentor others through their leadership journey. They allow us to feel the joy of helping people as well as the struggle of missing the mark so we can always aim for the former.

What was it for you? What was one of the defining moments or greatest lessons you learned in leadership?

We hear the word “successful” being thrown around a lot.

“She has a successful career in finance.”
“He’s enjoyed a long, successful career path in law.”
“They are successful business owners.”

The problem? No one is asking clarifying questions.

No one’s asking: What made her finance career successful? Why do you consider his path in law successful? Under what definition would you say those business owners achieved success?

Because the truth is - success means different things to different people. And if we asked questions like this more, we could get a glimpse into what success for THAT person is.

Instead, we’ve come to accept this “general” idea of success as achieving a certain title or making a lot of money - and just assume that’s what the successful person achieved.

If you’re responsible for leading a team of ten people — assuming every one of them have a goal to achieve the “success” of climbing the corporate ladder, making a lot of money and becoming the next manager, director, VP or beyond — you’re missing something.

You’re missing the person who would rather be the best sales person in the company than become a manager. You’re missing the person who believes success is finding harmony between work and family life. You’re missing the person who believes success is staying with one company their entire career.

You’re missing the person who you haven’t asked, “Well what does success mean to you?”

We know it means something different to everyone.

A good leader will find out what it means for each person they lead… so they can help them get there. Don't miss your chance to find out what it is for those on YOUR team.
