I can never pass up the opportunity to conduct a glacial distribution study! I always bring my hola hoop on trips, just in case I find a spread of cobbles worth counting. This area measured 12% exotic (metamorphic and igneous) rock mixed into the otherwise commonplace siltstone/mudstone bedrock. Keuka Lake was formed when glacial ice dug huge holes into the NYS bedrock. Large fragments of the ice broke off forming the lakes. As the ice melted, it dumped meters upon meters of unsorted silt-to-boulder-sized material behind.

Stops 1-3 are all located within the ancient lakebed of Glacial Lake Albany.

Today's project is a look at the micromorphology of soil samples from Falmouth, Me. This work is part of ongoing research of a ceramic vessel recovered from the Walker Site in Falmouth. Soil micromorphology is useful for provenancing the raw materials used by potters. It can also be useful for discriminating between archaeological levels. Photo 1 is the original soil sample and Photo 2 is edited and illustrates the pedofeatures present in the soil. This provides a visual blueprint for analysis.
