The word “buttload” may sound like pure slang, but it originally described a precise measure of liquid in medieval Europe. A butt was the name for a giant cask used to store wine, ale, and other drinks, especially in England. The capacity was fixed: one butt equaled two hogsheads, and each hogshead held 63 gallons, giving a total of 126 gallons. These oversized barrels were common in taverns and shipping, forming a standard in trade and storage. Over time, the technical use faded away, but the phrase stuck around. Today, when people joke about having a “buttload” of something, they’re unknowingly echoing an old legal unit of volume that once carried real weight in commerce.
