Pond Owners: This Is Happening More Than You Think…

These two photos tell a story we see all the time:

📸 A great blue heron caught on a game camera stealing a 1.5+ lb tilapia
📸 A massive bluegill that was actively being eaten this morning at our farm before we ran the bird off

These birds aren’t just “passing through," they are highly efficient predators that can significantly impact your fish population.

Here’s the reality:
A single heron can eat up to 1–2 lbs of fish per day
They return repeatedly once they find an easy food source
They target your largest, healthiest fish first (your broodstock)

That means fewer fish, slower growth, and setbacks in your pond goals.

What can you do?
• Add sufficient structure/habitat so fish have places to hide
• Use deterrents (decoys, lines, noise devices, but rotate them! Surface aerators can even have this effect.)
• Maintain deeper edges instead of shallow, easy hunting zones
• Stay consistent. Once birds pattern your pond, they’re hard to break

Predator pressure is one of the most overlooked reasons ponds underperform.

If you’re investing in your pond, protecting it matters just as much as stocking it. ***KEEP IN MIND: Great egrets, snowy egrets, great blue herons, and other migratory birds are protected under federal law. It’s illegal to shoot, trap, or harm them in any way.**

Think stocking your pond is the hard part? Think again.

Most pond owners assume stocking is 90% of the work—but in reality, it’s only about 10%. The real success comes from how you manage your fishery over time.

Join Texas A&M Agrilife AquaExtension for an upcoming webinar where they’ll break down practical, real-world strategies for:
🎣 Trophy bass, bluegill, catfish, and crappie management
🎣 Maximizing harvest vs. growing trophy fish
🎣 Controlling (not just wishing away) unwanted species
🎣 “Nuclear” options when things go wrong
🎣 Preventing problems before they start

Plus, stick around for a live 30-minute Q&A to get your questions answered.

16,000 lbs of tilapia. 3 weeks. Countless late nights. 🌙🐟

When the job needs to get done, our crew shows up...headlamps on, unloading in the dark, making sure every fish is handled with care and delivered right.

This is what dedication looks like.

’Tis the season for acclimation! 🌱🐟

With water temps across this part of Texas already hitting around 70°, we take extra care when delivering your fish to safely bring them up to temperature. Our fish are transported at about 60° to keep them in top condition, and warming them too quickly can cause serious stress, or worse.

The acclimation process can vary depending on the situation, including your pond setup and distance from the truck, but no matter the method, our goal is always the same: a smooth, stress-free transition from tank to pond.

Healthy fish = happy ponds!

Hybrid Striped Bass are one of the most exciting fish you can add to a Texas recreational pond.

These fast-growing hybrids combine the power of striped bass with the adaptability of white bass, creating a hard-fighting sport fish that thrives in managed ponds. They readily feed on pellets, grow quickly, and are functionally sterile, meaning that they won't overpopulate smaller ponds. The striper in this photo is about 8 months old and was stocked as a 5" fish.

For pond owners looking to add a high-energy fishing experience, Hybrid Striped Bass deliver strong fights, consistent growth, and great angling action.

Thinking about stocking your pond? Hybrid Stripers might be the perfect addition.
