Love is in the air—literally! 🐦✨ Did you know that many birds, just like penguins, mate for life? Swans gracefully glide together, doves symbolize peace and everlasting love, and albatrosses embark on epic journeys yet always return to their one true partner. Even humble lovebirds live up to their name, staying side by side through every season.
This Valentine’s Day, let’s take a cue from these loyal creatures. Because when you find the one, whether it’s with a pebble, a song, or a lifetime of companionship, you just know. ❤️🌹

The spotted laternfly most likely hitched a ride as a mass of eggs on a shipment of stone from China to Berks County, PA back in 2012. They’re big. They’re bright. They hop. And they are decimating vineyards and orchards in the Eastern US, lowering yields in vineyards where there are infestations by up to 90%.

As the planet’s economy has globalized, invasive species have gotten to be more common. Some are fine-ish (we’ve lived with European Starlings for a while now) to terrifying (Burmese Pythons are eating your dogs and cats in South Florida because....Florida). All are damaging. Estimates suggest that invasive species cause over $120 Billion in losses annually, which is the entire economic output of countries like New Zealand or Greece.

Sometimes though, nature provides some hope and some help. This great crested flycatcher was spotted in Central Park taking down a lanternfly. To them, the laternfliy is just another meal, so while we stomp and swat, they have discovered that they can snack.

Woodpeckers, cardinals, blue jays, and gray catbirds have all been spotted eating lanterflies this summer, which is one reason you may have seen a few less than last year. They won’t fix the problem, but they can help.

Here’s your weekly bird/wildlife-ish fact so you can be a smarty pants on meetings this week.

Bar-headed geese have been seen flying ABOVE MT. EVEREST. This is is higher than many airliners, in what is known as the troposphere. The temperature is around -30 to -40 degrees F and because it’s in the jet stream, the wind can be up to 200 mph. This altitude requires oxygen to survive for folks like you and I, but these geese don’t give a flying...opportunity like this to any other species.

How do they do it? Easy. they are GD’d super birds:

1) They have special blood-they have a special type of hemoglobin that allows them to bind more more oxygen to their cells in low oxygen environments.

2) They have bigger lungs than other geese.

3) They have more mitochondria in their muscle cells, specifically near the cell membranes. This allows them to use the oxygen they have more efficiently.

4) Good planning: bar-headed geese time their migrations to take advantage of tailwinds and updrafts, which helps them conserve energy.

There are only about 55,000 bar-headed geese on the planet. Protect these super high birds at all costs.

“This has an abundance of organization options for its size. The laptop pocket is well padded, and with how compact everything is I’m not at all worried about movement or damage. Build quality is great, I’m confident it will last many years if well taken care of.” - Darcy A

California has been taking it on the chin, so this is a post about them leading the way.

The State of California is suing for misleading the public for decades about the recyclability of plastic products, which start as the oil covering this brown pelican. California is charging that for years ExxonMobil ran deceptive marketing campaigns promoting plastic recycling as a solution to plastic waste, even though they knew that recycling many products (whether they have a number on them or not) are not recyclable and dangerous to the public. It’s a bit like how the to***co industry got sued years ago. It’s a good thing.

Exxon chose last week to countersue the State’s attorney general INDIVIDUALLY. Not the state, the man. Nice timing Exxon. Super smooth.

Exxon also sued and are seeking monetary damages from the Sierra Club, , , and .

70% of aluminum is recycled. Glass is made of sand and is easily, if not economically, recycled. Both products can be recycled indefinitely without losing quality or purity. Plastic is another story. It fills our waterways, our wildlife, and increasingly our own bodies. It looks like 💩 and it makes our world look like 💩.

Oil and beverage companies like Exxon, , , have for decades been telling us it’s the only way, because they make/save a LOT of money to do it that way. They’ll figure out ways to tell us it’s our fault. “Litterbug”? Keep America Beautiful? All created by the beverage companies. They made it, and they expect you to clean it up. Meanwhile, Exxon made 338 BILLION dollars last year. Their CEO made $36.9 million dollars. How much did you make?

When oil spills and plastic choke us to death, companies like Exxon, their executives teams, and the orgs they sponsor to clean up their mess get richer.

We can stop it, we just need to force them to.

We love this lawsuit and we applaud the hard work by the folks at Heal the Bay and AG Rob Bonta’s office that brought it. Get it.
