The rate of plastic entering our oceans is rapid and is predicted to rise 2.6 times by 2040 if it is not adequately monitored.

Ocean Legacy Foundation has created a solution that uses the plastic that is recovered from ocean and beach cleanups and gives it an economic value that stimulates the plastic circular economy. The organization has created the first commercially available plastic pellet in North America called Ocean Legacy Plastic.

The pellet is made from 100% post-consumer plastics from recovered marine gear, including buoys, fishing ropes, oyster trays and other marine products.

New York City’s largest fossil fuel-powered plant, the Ravenswood Generating Station, could soon become the nation’s first power plant to convert entirely to renewable energy.

Under a new plan announced by the company, the natural gas plant would be converted to renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.

This would be a major victory for environmental groups who have long fought for the plant’s conversion. It would also be a significant step forward for the city’s goal of reducing its emissions by 80 percent by 2050. Ravenswood Generating Station has been a significant source of air pollution in New York City for years; the area adjacent to it is known to locals as “asthma alley” due to the high asthma rates in the area.

Renewable energy from wind and solar is intermittent; winds are not constant or even predictable with 100% certainty, and while predictable, the sun only shines during the day. The key to making these abundant renewables work for society is energy storage; how do you store energy to make it useful later?

Reservoirs could supplement lithium-ion batteries, and existing coal plants can be converted into wind or sun energy distribution points.

The mine battery later recharges using electric motors to bring the weights back to the surface – in off-peak hours when electrical energy is cheap. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, gravity batteries don’t experience any self-discharge, allowing them to remain ready with energy for long periods.

Moreover, this strategy offers plenty of additional advantages; it maintains jobs, keeps unsightly infrastructure out of sight and takes advantage of existing connections to the grid.

It’s not all about money. It’s about people, farms, land, and the environment. Since its inception, Delaware River Solar has introduced eighty farms across New York to the joys of welcoming solar panels on their land, with fifty more farms in the pipeline.

In 2016, Winter launched DRS and began pulling in people he had worked with in order to staff the new company. He now has 25 employees, many of whom have worked with him for 20 years and one individual who has worked with him for three decades.

Community solar is poised to become much more common thanks to a new $7 billion fund tied to the Inflation Reduction Act. The EPA began the process of setting up the fund last week.

The large majority of subscribers and projects are in six states: Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey and New York. About 20 states have active programs and many of the rest have rules that limit the ability of developers to do subscription-based projects.

The State of New York has currently a operating capacity of 1,159 MW, this is the highest number among the state community solar programs. The national leader in community solar belongs to New York after substantial growth in 2022. The New York program has gained momentum thanks to initiatives by the state government and the nonprofit sector, including some that focus on giving low-income households access to solar.

Notpla (short for not plastic) is a company moving past single-use plastic by transforming seaweed into a compostable and biodegradable material. The company uses a seaweed-based film that replaces plastic and breaks down in a few weeks.

Along with 100% biodegradable condiment packages and seaweed-based paper, the company has also developed a bio-based film made of seaweed, plant and mineral extracts designed to replace commercial kitchen wrap. The wrap protects the food and can be dissolved in water – think noodles packages dropped in boiling water.

The production does not compete with food crops; it doesn’t require fertilizers or freshwater and actively sequesters carbon dioxide.

The fabrication process makes use of self-assembling nanoparticles, which form an organized material structure based on their interactions with nearby particles without any external instructions. Thermal energy harvested by the device can be transformed to electricity using thermoelectric materials.

For 100 years, people have dreamed of sending vast arrays of solar panels into space and beaming their energy down to Earth. Unlike intermittent renewable-energy sources on the ground, these orbiting panels would always bask in bright sunlight and would potentially offer a continuous supply of power.

Now such schemes are beginning to look possible, thanks to cheaper hardware and the falling cost of space launches. Teams around the world are working on key parts of space-based solar-power systems, and a prototype built by researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena should begin experiments in orbit this month.

According to David Sandbank, Vice President of Distributed Energy Resources for NYSERDA, New York is well on its way to reaching its goal of 70% of all electricity needs from carbon free generators by 2030.

NY State is now one of the leaders in solar, and community solar, in the nation. We currently have well over one gigawatt of community solar in NY, which is enough to serve over 100,000 customers, and that is continuing to grow.

“We have very large goals here in NY State. Seventy percent of all the electricity generated has to come from carbon free generators by 2030,” Sandbank explained. “That’s not too far from now and it’s really important that people in NY see, feel, and hear that progress, and community solar is very good at that.”

Scientists from Osaka Metropolitan University have found a way to synthesize fumaric acid, a raw material used for producing the biodegradable plastic polybutylene succinate, using artificial photosynthesis. The plastic, typically made from petroleum, was synthesized from carbon dioxide, biomass-derived compounds, and solar energy.

The study, published in the journal Sustainable Energy & Fuels, documents the first time that fumaric acid has been successfully synthesized from carbon dioxide and sunlight. The research shows that fumaric acid can be made from carbon dioxide and biomass rather than petroleum.

The team’s success in using solar energy to synthesize fumaric acid shows promise in using artificial photosynthesis in the future to synthesize other beneficial macromolecules from carbon dioxide and relying less on fossil fuels.
