Logo design for Forest Academy, an annual four-part field series led by Los Padres ForestWatch. They have partnered with trusted local experts to provide guided field experiences where participants can learn to observe, identify, and better understand the natural world. The theme for 2026 is Flora and Fauna, featuring Native Plants, Birds, Animal Tracking & S**t Watch, and Bats.

In the design, I chose to represent each topic, rather than a single image, to highlight the series aspect of this program. Illustrating the four icons with a consistency of style and similar amount of detail was essential for a cohesive design. This design can be altered each year to represent the Forest Academy’s new topics.

This year’s series has sold out, but more information is available here: ForestWatch.org/event/forest-academy-event-series

In collaboration with Los Padres ForestWatch, I designed a Wine for Wilderness logo and passport. 24 California Central Coast wineries are included, and passport bearers can receive a wine tasting at each. Wineries are “paired” with a nearby hiking trail, encouraging exploration of our local public lands. There is a space on each winery’s page for a stamp. Proceeds from passport sales directly support Los Padres ForestWatch’s mission to protect wildlife, wilderness, water, and sustainable access throughout the Los Padres National Forest and the Carrizo Plain National Monument.

Logo redesign for Keep the Sespe Wild – a grassroots group dedicated to preserving the Sespe wilderness and its free-flowing river in Southern California. Founded in 1988, the campaign successfully lobbied for the Sespe Creek’s designation as a Wild & Scenic River in 1992 and continues to advocate for its protection, most recently by opposing a Forest Service plan to log old-growth Pine Mountain forests. The wilderness area is in the Los Padres National Forest and includes diverse landscapes of gorges, hot springs, chaparral and sandstone formations. Wildlife in the area includes black bears, bobcats, and most notably California Condors.

In the redesign process I offered a variety of concepts and styles; the chosen direction built upon the previous logo’s look in color and illustration style. With this redesign I wanted to emphasize the river and for the viewer to feel the wonder of the flowing water and the magic of a condor flying overhead.

Logo redesign for Outdoor Connections, a program by nonprofit Los Padres ForestWatch. The program’s mission is to help bridge the gap between underserved communities and the natural world by expanding access to wild places, promoting outdoor safety, nurturing a sense of belonging in the outdoors, and instilling a commitment to conservation. My goal was to capture the feeling of encountering nature on a very personal level - the sense of wonder it can bring. Stylistically I had in mind symbology and pictograms, illustrated in a clean, modern way.

Logo for the Ventura Superior Court. The challenge for this design was to convey the Court and also place it in Ventura County. A second challenge was due to the modern style of the current courthouse (Government Center) which does not have the look of a traditional courthouse. We tried versions of Ventura’s two past courthouses, both of which have/had traditional columns, which readily conveyed “Court”. But the committee in the end preferred this view of the entrance to the current courthouse. Above the center illustration is a depiction of Arch Rock and two other small rock islands near Anacapa in our local Channel Islands National Park. Below is a view of crop rows, hills and mountains, highlighting the agriculture and landscapes of Ventura County.

Brochure for Los Padres ForestWatch. Print projects are less common now because of the transition to web communications, and we had not done a new brochure in 10 years. So this was fun to design.

Logo design for Wildland Mapping Institute, a new non-profit providing GIS (geographic information system) analysis and map-making services to public land conservation efforts/uses. The design needed to be clean and to read well when reproduced small on maps, yet also convey what the nonprofit is about. A compass concept seemed the strongest direction, and integrating topographic lines help place the nonprofit’s mapping work in undeveloped lands. Somewhat breaking with branding norms, we went with a suite of colors for the final design to offer choices when applying to various maps/pieces.

Logo redesign for Channel Islands Law Group. Their original logo also featured a rendering of a lighthouse - a concept the group chose to retain. They are an estate and planning firm serving individuals and families. Skilled mediators, they offer alternative dispute resolution services in many areas of the law. So the lighthouse concept serves them well, as a beacon towards security, peace of mind, and trust. I took inspiration from the firm’s name to depict an island lighthouse (that on Anacapa Island in particular.) Graphically, I wanted to convey both warmth and strength, so I used bold lines with rounded elements and echoed the thinner lines from the shining light in the shading of the lighthouse.

Logo design for a publishing company. Formally Propriometrics Press, the company was originally formed to publish the works of bestselling author, speaker, biomechanist and a leader of the Movement movement, Katy Bowman. A name change came along with their decision to expand their offerings to include books about movement in broad terms. Tagline to the new name is “Movement Matters.” A challenge to the logo design was that it must be simple enough to read well at a very small size, on the spine of a book. The essence of the company we wanted the logo to convey was the reward of effort in taking positive steps. I chose in this concept to feature an insect, rather than a figure, in upward movement. Nature is a large component in Katy’s work so that seemed appropriate. An open book provides the groundwork for the ant’s effort; similarly, we hope, the reader’s.

I always thought that designing a wine label would be a great project. I was afforded that opportunity with Solminer Wine Company when they generously offered to produce a limited-edition blend for Los Padres ForestWatch, donating the entire purchase price to the organization. They named it Condor Red Blend, and proceeds from it’s sale will support ForestWatch’s efforts protecting endangered California Condors and their habitat. I was glad to have the opportunity to design the label, and so grateful to Solminer’s generosity. The wine is available here https://store.forestwatch.org/products/2021-condor-red-wine and here https://www.solminer.com/product/2021-condor-Red-Blend
