What a great day on the golf course with an incredible group of women! ⛳️

At Level Upkes, we believe strong businesses are built on strong relationships, and some of the best connections happen outside of the office.

Great conversations, plenty of laughs, and time spent connecting with leaders throughout our local business community made for an afternoon well spent.

A prospect recently shared something with me after a meeting that stayed with me.

He said the questions I asked got some members of his team brainstorming…

…and others responding with “deafening silence.”

I actually think there’s a lot of value in that silence.

Because growth doesn’t always start with an answer. Sometimes it starts with the question no one has asked yet.

The question that exposes a disconnect.

The question that challenges an assumption.

The question that makes a leadership team stop and think: Are we really as aligned on this as we thought?

That’s a big part of what we do at Level Upkes.

We help successful businesses Slow Down to Speed Up, ask better questions, get clear on what’s really happening, identify the right priorities, and create alignment around what comes next.

In this case, the company decided the timing wasn’t right to engage us. They have some internal priorities and financial targets they want to hit first. I respect that.

But they also told us they saw real value in the conversation and want to revisit working together as they enter their next stage of growth.

It was a good reminder:

You don’t have to be struggling to need an outside perspective.

Sometimes the biggest opportunity is simply having someone ask the question that makes the room go quiet.

August has a way of creating a natural pause.

We’re past the halfway point of the year, but there’s still plenty of year left. It’s a good time to look at what’s working, what needs attention, and where we want to be more intentional.

And for me, a lot of that comes back to people.

You can have great systems, a solid strategy, and ambitious goals. But at the end of the day, businesses are built by people, and relationships are what keep them moving forward.

When you invest in your team, take care of your clients, and make time for the relationships that matter, you’re building something stronger than a good quarter. You’re building something that can last.

Always enjoy getting out, catching up with familiar faces, meeting new people, and supporting organizations doing great work in our community.

I recently reached out to a company we've wanted to work with for a long time.

Their response was kind and straightforward:
"We're not looking to add any consulting support right now."

My first thought?
Good. Neither are we.

That response reminded me why we rebranded as Level Upkes.

We're not consultants.
We're not "just" coaches.
We're Strategic Growth Partners.

Here's why that matters:

In a world where AI can generate strategies, summarize data, and provide answers in seconds, answers are becoming a commodity.

What AI can't do is build trust inside a leadership team.

It's Shark Week, so it feels like the perfect time to share one of the most unforgettable experiences I've ever had.

Just last week, while visiting the North Shore of O'ahu, I had the opportunity to free dive with tiger sharks.

The question I've been asked the most is, "Weren't you scared?"

Honestly, no.

I had a healthy respect for the sharks, but I also had complete confidence in the experienced professionals at One Ocean Diving guiding us. They understood shark behavior, knew how to prepare us, and made sure we approached the experience with knowledge rather than fear.

That got me thinking about business.

The most successful companies don't become great by assuming they already know everything. They continue to learn, seek expert advice, and look for opportunities to improve, even when they're already thriving.

That's one of the things I love most about what we do at Level Upkes. We partner with successful businesses that want to keep growing, improving, and reaching the next level. The best leaders know there's always another level to achieve.

What's the funniest thing your kids have ever done while you were trying to work?

Back in 2016, I had a home office, and my kids were 17, 15, and 13. It was summertime, which meant the house was full of activity: friends stopping by, snacks disappearing, swimming, running in and out, and plenty of noise. If you've raised teenagers, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Trying to get work done from home wasn't always easy.

One day, after one too many interruptions, I opened my office door, looked at the kids, and said, "Shhh... Dad's trying to make money."

Later that day, I walked out of my office and found this written on the whiteboard outside my door.

"Shhh... Money being made!!"

I couldn't help but laugh. They were giving me a hard time, but they also understood what I was trying to accomplish. It's one of those little moments I've never forgotten.

Working from home has many advantages, but it also comes with plenty of distractions, especially during the summer when the kids are home.

If you're in that season of life, here's my advice: get up a little earlier, knock out your most important work before everyone else is awake, and then make time to be present with your family.

The work will always be there. Childhood won't.

To all of my fellow entrepreneurs and work-from-home professionals, I hope you're finding the right balance this summer. Enjoy the distractions every once in a while, they grow up faster than you think.

July is often a reminder that some of the biggest accomplishments begin with a goal that once felt impossible.

Whether in business, science, or everyday life, many of the biggest breakthroughs began with someone who decided the obstacles weren't a reason to stop; they were a reason to keep going.

It's easy to talk yourself out of a big goal. The competition feels too strong. The timing never seems quite right. The path forward isn't always clear. But the goals that stretch us the most are often the ones most worth pursuing.

I may have missed a World Cup match for this… but there’s nothing quite like watching a leadership team finally find its rhythm.

A lot of companies have talented people, ambitious goals, and a clear vision for where they want to go. What they often don’t have- the tools and systems to get there.

That’s when priorities start competing, ownership gets blurry, and good people spend too much time trying to figure out the next move.

But when the plan becomes clear and the team is aligned, everything changes.

And it's worth getting excited about.

Even if it means missing a few minutes of the game.
