Today marks the 13th year for my consulting practice. It’s a teenager! What a ride! My clients have been A-MAZ-ING to work with and support on their journey towards creating exceptional workplaces. I am often in awe of the leaders I get to work alongside and projects that come my way. Thanks to everyone who has offered advice, encouragement, referrals, a listening ear, a roadmap, and opportunities.

This is for you if:

✅ You're managing at least 1 team member up to 100+ and beyond. You might be an experienced manager who needs a refresh, or maybe you have never had manager training (this is way more common than you might think!) or you could be just starting to manage a team and you're eager to learn.

✅ Your title could be manager, director, VP, CFO, President, or CFO or anything in that realm. In this course, the cross-pollination of ideas comes from all sources!

✅ You're a curious learner who is ready to add tools, tactics, and education to how they show up and lead as a manager.

Curious? Send me a message and let's chat about it. 💬

Honestly, you don’t know who feels worse about giving feedback: your employee (as the one on the receiving end)…

…or you, the person who has to bring up an issue in a way that’s kind and that will also lead to change and growth.

Truth is, no one really enjoys the feedback process.

But without it, your employees, your teams, and your organization will never reach their full potential.

Which is why my latest blog focuses on learning how to give feedback in a way that feels great for everyone involved — while also giving your people the information they need for professional progress.

Join me on Apr 25th for a hands-on workshop on giving feedback!

Asana shares great content in this article about selecting company values. Some of the examples are inspiring. Personally I admire the aspirational values versus the ones that draw a line in the sand that employees ‘should not cross.’

How do you feel about creating company values? Does your company have values like these?

Quick Workplace Tip:

It's a myth to think that 'great managers' are born that way. They were promoted to a manager and immediately excelled in this complex role of managing people. It's simply not true.

Most people can manage people well with the right ambition, curiosity, and practice.

Before you scoff at my idea, keep in mind that most people aren't keenly interested in this skill set and striving to become great at managing people. Some are assigned the task, and barely fit it into their schedule. We all know those managers. But, managers that hone their craft can become great.

How are you honing your craft of managing people? Have you taken any training or read any books that you recommend?

We are on day six with significant snow on the ground in my neighborhood. Also, not including the weekend, this is day 4 of no school. Every time I see that it is once again snowing outside, I have an outsized reaction like, 'OMG, it's snowing again', or something like that. ;)

On the bright side, today my teenage daughter hole-punched three brand-new and beautifully updated client employee handbooks*, then she tucked them away nicely in client binders for safekeeping. So, while I am still disappointed that the kids have missed so much school, I am grateful for the help restoring my office to its tidy state.

Entrepreneurs, consultants, what kinds of tasks do your kids help with?

*Yes, I still print handbooks to make reference notes and future updates easier.

Attention Managers and Team Leaders:

Employee Appreciation Day is Friday, March 3rd, 2023. This is your friendly reminder to make some plans to show appreciation to your direct reports. It's no fun scrambling at the last minute!

Here is my formula for how to show appreciation to your team. I've found that it's not one item that makes employees feel appreciated but a thoughtful combination. Don't forget the handwritten note of appreciation! That is the key.

Employee Appreciation Formula: food + gift, act of service, or event + handwritten note of appreciation = employees who feel appreciated

You can read about this formula and ideas for how to celebrate on my blog.

In what way has a manager celebrated you/your team in the past that made you feel appreciated? Let's generate some thoughtful ideas!

Practical and foundational knowledge about how to lead in 2023 are the cornerstones of the Manager Training Series. Participants leave each session of the 8-week series with management tactics that they can implement immediately with their team.

And, as this participant said, the series gives space to practice in a safe environment which is a key to being able to implement these new skills. When was the last time you got to practice new management skills?

Learn more about the Manager Training Series and apply here: https://loom.ly/PCj1a5E

The next session begins on January 31st. There are a few seats left in this boutique learning experience.

We were honored to visit Dr. Martin Luther King Junior's neighborhood (King Historic District) on a trip to Atlanta last year. It was humbling and offered tremendous perspective on his work to propel equal rights for all people. Our remarkable tour guide told stories that were immersive and brought to life the work of Dr. King and the Old Fourth Ward.

I had a feeling of awe as we walked through the Ebenezer Baptist Church, so many influential people had also walked these aisles to experience MLK's upbringing and life.

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter." MLK

Stay loud. Keep talking about the things that matter.
