DOE, DHS, FEMA, ED, OPM, USAID, CFPB, VA, USDA, EPA, HHS, DOI, GSA, SBA, and IRS.

These acronyms represent federal agencies affected by widespread job cuts in the past few weeks.

It's kind of unthinkable, isn't it? Federal employment has long been regarded as stable and secure, desirable in many metro areas, especially DC.

But that notion has, quite dramatically, been turned on its head.

It's disconcerting and scary when something you feel so sure about becomes wildly uncertain.

And now, thousands of federal employees - many of whom may not have searched for work in years - must scramble to put together a job search strategy to land private sector work - which is quite a different process than the federal system to which they've become accustomed.

If this is you, or someone you know - let us help!

My resume writing colleague Lisa Dupras and I are hosting a free, virtual career transition workshop on Monday, 24 Feb 2025 at 7:00 pm eastern. We will talk about strategies to help federal employees prepare for employment in the private sector.

Details are on the registration website (link in first comment). Any current or former federal employees are welcome to attend, plus anyone experiencing job loss with a funded nonprofit or government contractor.

Please share this with your fed friends! We know many haven't invested in their LinkedIn profiles because of security clearance concerns. If you want this info via email, please DM me, happy to share.

Have you been told you’re “overqualified” for a job? Here’s how to counteract assumptions by controlling your career story! ⬇️

It’s frustrating to be dismissed as "overqualified" before you've even had a conversation. But this rejection is based in assumption, right? You haven't even had a chance to make your case!

Here’s the reality: Hiring managers want to know why you’re applying for their role. They’re reading your resume for clues that offer a clear alignment between your background and the job requirements. If your resume doesn’t spell it out, they’ll fill in the blanks—and often with assumptions that work against you.

“Overqualified” often translates to:

➡️ “Why would someone at your level want to report to me?”
🤔 (Their fear: You want my job! or, You'll be bored!)

or

➡️ “You’re a flight risk, just waiting for a better offer.”
🤔 (Their fear: I’ll have to fill this role again in less than a year.)

Here’s how to change your narrative:

1️⃣ Control Your Story

Be upfront in your resume, cover letter, and interviews. Explain why you’re intentionally pursuing this role at this level. Maybe you’re looking to leverage your deep experience in a more hands-on way, contribute to a team without the pressures of executive leadership, or pivot to a different focus in your career. Whatever the reason, make it clear.

2️⃣ Flip the Script

Position your experience as an asset. Your seniority gives you unique insights into what works and what doesn’t. Frame this as an advantage—someone who’s been in the trenches and knows how to navigate challenges. You’re not there to call the shots; you’re there to strengthen the team.

3️⃣ Leave No Room for Doubt

Don’t let hiring managers guess or assume. Tell them exactly why you want this role, what you bring to the table, and how you’ll add value. When you’re clear about your goals and deliberate about your application, you eliminate the fear of misalignment.

Overqualified isn’t a barrier—it’s a story waiting to be reframed. Take the reins, own your narrative, and show them why you’re the perfect fit.

✨ ✨ PS - an experienced resume writer can help you develop career marketing documents that position you for this kind of pivot. Want to talk about it? Send me a message, or visit my website, hrmeg.com and click "Contact." ✨ ✨

As an HR professional with extensive experience supporting hiring managers through the recruitment and selection process, I know what happens behind the scenes, on the other side of the desk, dear Job Seeker! I have gained valuable insider knowledge during my 30+ year career in HR, and I use this asset to coach and guide my job-seeking clients throughout their search.

Here are 10 insider insights you get when you work with me:

1. Resume Optimization for ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems):
I know how resumes are screened by ATS software and what keywords and formats are more likely to pass through the system. With this knowledge, I can guide job seekers in optimizing their resumes for both human and digital eyes, helping them avoid common pitfalls that could result in automatic rejection.

2. What Hiring Managers Really Look For:
I understand the nuances of hiring criteria that go beyond job descriptions, such as cultural fit, growth potential, and specific soft skills that may not be listed but are highly valued. I can coach job seekers on tailoring their application materials to align with these often-unspoken expectations.

3. Interview Dynamics and Red Flags:
With a background in observing and guiding interview processes, I know the subtle signs that can make or break an interview. I offer advice on body language, tone, and phrasing, and coach candidates on how to effectively respond to address tough questions or explain gaps in their work history.

4. Behavioral Interviewing and STAR Method:
I’m quite familiar with the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) technique and how hiring managers use it to evaluate candidates. I teach job seekers how to craft their responses in a way that showcases their accomplishments clearly and memorably.

5. How Hiring Decisions Are Really Made:
Job seekers often assume it’s purely about qualifications, but I know that hiring decisions can be influenced by internal factors, team dynamics, and even budget constraints. I offer insights into what typically happens behind the scenes, giving job seekers a more strategic approach to following up and positioning themselves.

6. Common Resume and Interview Mistakes:
From formatting errors to overused phrases and unclear language, I have seen the mistakes that consistently turn off hiring managers. I help job seekers avoid these traps, crafting resumes and preparing interview answers that stand out.

7. The Importance of Cultural Fit and Soft Skills:
I know that many hiring managers prioritize cultural fit and certain soft skills, sometimes even over hard skills. I guide job seekers on demonstrating these qualities in their applications and interviews, suggesting ways to be authentic and memorable.

8. Negotiation Techniques and Salary Insights:
I’m familiar with compensation negotiation tactics from both sides of the desk. I coach job seekers on how to negotiate effectively, knowing when and how to ask for more, and how to frame their requests in a professional and compelling manner.

9. The Value of Follow-Up and Professional Etiquette:
Follow-up emails and a polished professional presence can be powerful and can even make the difference. I help job seekers understand the right timing and tone for follow-ups, thank-you notes, and professional networking.

10. How to Address Employment Gaps and Career Changes:
Hiring managers often have reservations about gaps or career pivots. I know how to frame these in a positive light and help job seekers develop strategies to address these concerns with confidence, sharing just the right amount of information to ease the hiring manager’s reservations.

This is the kind of guidance I offer through personalized coaching with each client I work with. This insider knowledge helps job seekers better understand the process and gives them the confidence they need to take into the search process, helping them stand apart from the competition.
