What do public school teachers actually want from their retirement plans?

According to new research from the NTSA, the answer is clear: educators want choices, trusted financial guidance, and control over their future.

For school district leaders, those preferences can offer a useful perspective when evaluating how well a retirement plan is serving the people who rely on it. We took a closer look at the research and what it could mean for school districts in our latest blog post.

When school districts evaluate their retirement plan offerings, conversations often center on compliance, administration, fees, and provider relationships. While those factors are important, there’s one perspective that deserves special attention: the educators themselves.

When using an HSA or FSA benefits card for the first time, you may be wondering how it works and what purchases are eligible.

Here are a few things to know about using your benefits card:

1. Your benefits card works like a debit card.
When you use it for eligible expenses at approved retailers, funds are typically pulled directly from your tax-free account, helping simplify the payment process.

2. Some eligible expenses may be automatically identified at checkout.
Depending on the retailer and available systems, eligible purchases may be processed separately from non-eligible items. If a purchase is not eligible, you may need to use another form of payment.

3. Keep your receipts.
Even when a benefits card makes payments easier, it’s important to save documentation for eligible expenses in case verification is needed.

Understanding how your HSA or FSA works can help you make the most of your benefits.

Back-to-school season means checking off school supply lists, updating schedules, and making sure your child is ready for the year ahead. With August being Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, it’s also a great time to schedule an annual eye exam.

Good vision plays an important role in the classroom. From reading the whiteboard to focusing on assignments, clear eyesight can have a real impact on a child's learning experience.

If your benefits include vision coverage, an FSA, or an HSA, you may be able to use those funds toward eligible expenses like eye exams, prescription glasses, or contact lenses.

If you’re not sure what qualifies, the FSA Store is a great resource for exploring eligible vision products and expenses.

Recent SECURE 2.0 provisions introduced additional distribution options that may give participants more flexibility during certain financial hardships, while helping employers build retirement plans that better support today's workforce.

For plan sponsors, understanding these options is about more than staying current with legislation. It's an opportunity to create a retirement plan that reflects the realities employees face throughout their careers and to communicate those benefits in a way that's clear and easy to understand.

If you're exploring ways to strengthen your 403(b) plan, our latest blog takes a closer look at how distribution flexibility can support both employers and employees.

When life changes, your benefits may need to change too.

Certain events such as getting married, welcoming a child, or losing other health coverage may allow you to update your benefits outside of the annual Open Enrollment period. Understanding your options early can help ensure you and your family maintain the coverage you need.

In recognition of National UV Safety Month, it’s a good reminder that sun exposure is often cumulative, and prevention matters most.

Using sunscreen, seeking shade, and protecting your eyes from UV exposure are simple steps that can support long-term wellness.

As summer continues, reviewing your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) may help you take advantage of eligible preventive and wellness-related expenses.
