EQUILIBRIUM. It's been a while since I posted here, but I am inspired to quote a blog post I just read, given the challenges of today. It's from Dennis Adsit, Principal at Adsum Coaching and Consulting. He says: A "strategy for getting [a] handle [on] your psychic house on the inside is to shift your focus to a bigger game... develop a larger mission and a vision for that mission... With your mind and heart [focused] on bigger objectives... This is part of what I imagine enabled Martin Luther King, in the face of blinding prejudice and horrific acts of racism to see a brighter future and reiterate the phrase 'the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice,' versus being completely broken by the continuous stream of injustices all around him." Good advice for maintaining our equilibrium in the year(s) to come.

How are you maintaining your equilibrium these days?

Many clients request coaching due to stress, burnout and a feeling they've lost something essential to their being.

Does this sound like you? "Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, 'Too many people die with their music still in them' ... 'What if the problem is that people are still alive but their music has died?' And that... is what burnout feels like – being alive but feeling like your music has died."

How can we find the resilience to be present and live the lives we choose?

I like this article. Take a look:

This is an HBR interview about our inner critics (with broad application for both men and women), and what holds us back from taking the steps forward in our lives and careers, whether that is going for a promotion or deciding how/when to retire. I'd love to hear what you think.

Sheryl Sandberg, on resilience:
"I have learned that resilience can be learned. Adam M. Grant taught me that three things are critical to resilience and that I can work on all three. Personalization—realizing it is not my fault. He told me to ban the word “sorry.” To tell myself over and over, This is not my fault. Permanence—remembering that I won’t feel like this forever. This will get better. Pervasiveness—this does not have to affect every area of my life; the ability to compartmentalize is healthy."

I don't often post resume articles, but this one is succinct and to the point. My only disagreement is about chronological vs functional resumes. I believe that 99% of resumes can be presented in chronological format (thereby not asking recruiters to guess why it's in functional format - and a given that it'll be tossed!). My clients learn to present their background for the job of their future using the facts and chronology of their past experience - with excellent results!

April seems to be "grow my career month." Lots of people are in contact with me about growing their careers. Maybe it's the optimism of spring or the Red Sox home opener. Maybe it's just time to take action. Let's be optimistic together!

Well, yes, I'm a little biased. I'll explain. But first... I believe in vacations. Everyone needs a break from their routine, even if that routine is a job search - or perhaps especially when it's a job search! It gives one time to reflect, gain new perspectives, recharge, start again with fresh energy. How am I biased? My husband runs these trips, and I go on most of them, so I know first hand how wonderful they are. They are incredibly economical. Music! In sub-freezing weather, with ice and snow, music is an antidote. May I suggest... go out and listen to live music, sing along with your favorite recording, play an instrument, sing in the shower, play your music loud! And dance!
