What are millijoules, and what role do they actually play in laser cleaning?

Wattage is usually the first number people hear about a laser cleaning system, 300W, 500W, 1000W and so on. It measures the laser's power output over time. Millijoules measure something different, the energy contained in each individual pulse.

And in pulsed laser cleaning, that matters because the way that energy is delivered, pulse by pulse, directly affects how the laser interacts with the material you're cleaning.

Think about it like a truck. You can have a high horsepower and still have a hard time getting a loaded trailer moving if the rest of the drivetrain and traction aren't there. Horsepower (Wattage) tells you how much power the engine can produce over time, while torque (Millijoules) tells you about the rotational force available at the wheels.

Laser cleaning works the same way. Wattage tells you how much power the system can deliver over time. Millijoules tell you how much energy is contained in each individual pulse.

That doesn't mean higher millijoules automatically means better or faster cleaning. Pulse energy has to be considered along with other factors like spot size, beam profile, pulse duration, frequency, scanning speed, and the material you're working on. Those factors determine how that energy actually reaches the surface and interacts with it.

That's why the right pulse energy for delicate paint removal can be very different from what you'd use on heavy rust or thick coatings. It's also why two machines with the same wattage can perform very differently depending on their pulse energy and the rest of their specifications.

Wattage alone doesn't tell you how much energy is in each pulse, and millijoules alone doesn't tell you how much power the system can sustain over the course of a job.

So, wattage isn't the wrong number to ask about, it's just not the whole picture.

If you're comparing pulsed laser systems, ask for the millijoule rating right alongside the wattage. One tells you the laser's power over time, while the other tells you how much energy is contained in each individual pulse, and you need both to understand what you're actually getting. The two numbers are also mathematically related through repetition rate (average power equals pulse energy multiplied by repetition rate), so wattage and millijoules aren't completely independent specs. Spot size, pulse duration, frequency, scanning speed and beam profile round out the picture too, but that's a conversation for another day.

Spend enough time around this industry and you start noticing something. A lot of the people selling lasers have never actually run one, except the day somebody shot a marketing video and handed them a cleaning head. So, when something goes wrong on an actual job, they rely on scripted answers. Can they tell you why the machine's doing what it's doing right in front of you?

None of that makes them dishonest. It means they're selling something they've never actually leaned on. There's a difference between knowing what a laser is supposed to do and knowing why it's actually behaving that way, on a part that doesn't match the demo video, on a timeline that doesn't care about ideal conditions. And let's be honest, conditions are never ideal in this industry.

That gap is the real problem, and it's the part no spec sheet shows you. Anybody can hand you a wattage and millijoule rating, but nobody can hand you the hours, the jobs, the times the settings that worked on a similar job didn't work today. What those hours actually buy you is understanding your system, what the parameters do, and how they work for or against each other.

I'm not telling you to distrust every sales rep in this business. I'm telling you to ask the one question that actually tells you something before you buy from anybody in it: how many hours have you personally spent behind the beam.

Somebody asked me last week if a laser is basically just a fancier sandblaster. No. And the reason it isn't is the same reason it's safer to run than pretty much anything else on the market.

Sandblasting throws media at a part and hopes the substrate stays intact. Chemical stripping means fumes, a respirator and EPA paperwork. A laser does neither. It's light tuned to a specific wavelength that gets absorbed by rust, paint, oil or grime, but doesn't affect the base metal. No media. No chemical bath. No contact at all.

Everybody in this industry talks about that precision like it's a sales feature. Fair enough, it is. But the part that doesn't get said enough is that the same precision is what keeps the guy running the machine safer. No silica dust in the air. No solvent fumes. No media kicking back at your face shield. You're setting power, frequency, pulse rate and speed on a screen instead of guessing how hard to lean into it, allowing science to do the work.

Different isn't always better, except when it is
