💜 World Mental Health Day: Because Their Feelings Matter, too. 🧓💜

Growing older brings many changes, but one thing should never change: every older adult deserves to feel loved, heard, valued, and supported. 💜

Retirement, health challenges, the loss of loved ones, and spending more time alone can affect an older adult’s emotional well-being. Sometimes, a simple conversation, a familiar activity, or a little extra time with someone who cares can make a meaningful difference. 🫶

As families and caregivers, we can help by:
💜 Checking in regularly and asking how they feel.
👂 Listening patiently without judgment.
🌷 Encouraging hobbies and activities they enjoy.
📞 Making time for visits, phone calls, and meaningful connections.
🩺 Recognizing emotional changes and encouraging professional support when needed.

Remember, mental health is just as important as physical health. Feelings of loneliness, persistent sadness, or anxiety shouldn't simply be dismissed as a normal part of aging. Every older adult deserves compassion, dignity, and the opportunity to enjoy a fulfilling life.

This World Mental Health Day, take a moment to reach out to an older adult in your life. Your presence, patience, and kindness may mean more than you realize. 💜

💬 Who is an older adult you can check in on today? Share a little love with them!

At Absolute Home Care Plus, when the ones you love matter, their whole well-being matters, too. 💜

💜🩺 Your health information should empower you—not leave you feeling confused.

During Health Literacy Month, we’re reminded that understanding medical information is an important part of caring for ourselves and the older adults we love.

From medication instructions and test results to care plans and healthcare appointments, it’s okay to pause and ask questions. In fact, asking for clarification can help you feel more confident and prepared.

If something doesn’t make sense, speak up. Take notes. Keep important information organized. And make sure your loved one understands what comes next. 💬📝

Because when families and caregivers understand the information behind a care plan, they can feel more confident in supporting the people who matter most. 💜

✨ Better understanding. Better conversations. Healthier tomorrows.

There’s no such thing as a silly question when it comes to your health. 🩺💜

❤️ Your heart works hard for you every day. This World Heart Day, let’s give it a little love, too.

Heart health matters at every age—and small, everyday choices can make a meaningful part of a healthy routine. 💜

For older adults and their caregivers, caring for the heart can look like:
🥗 Choosing nourishing, balanced foods
🚶 Staying active with safe movement
💧 Drinking enough water throughout the day
😴 Making time for rest and quality sleep
🩺 Keeping up with regular healthcare visits
🧘 Finding healthy ways to manage stress
❤️ And remembering that caregivers need care, too!

Heart health is a family affair. When possible, make healthy habits something you and your loved one can practice together. A walk around the neighborhood, a nutritious meal, or simply taking time to rest can be a small step toward supporting overall well-being.

This World Heart Day, take a moment to care for the heart that helps you do everything you love. ❤️

💬 What is one heart-healthy habit you’re practicing today?

🩺❤️ Know Your Cholesterol, Know Your Numbers

You can't always *feel* high cholesterol—but you can learn your numbers and take steps to support your heart health. 💜

Cholesterol is something your body needs to function, but understanding your levels is an important part of staying informed about your overall health.

A lipid panel may measure:
🩸 Total Cholesterol — the overall amount of cholesterol in your blood
🔵 LDL Cholesterol — often called “bad” cholesterol because elevated levels can contribute to plaque buildup in the arteries
🟢 HDL Cholesterol — often called “good” cholesterol because it helps transport cholesterol away from the arteries
🩸 Triglycerides — another type of fat in the blood that can also be important to heart health

Why does screening matter?
High cholesterol often doesn't cause noticeable symptoms, so someone can feel perfectly healthy while still having elevated levels. Routine checkups and cholesterol screening can help you stay informed and give you an opportunity to discuss your results with your healthcare provider.
💜 Know your numbers.
💜 Ask questions about your results.
💜 Follow the care plan recommended by your healthcare provider.
💜 Build healthy habits that support your overall well-being.

👩‍⚕️ Caregiver Tip:
If you're caring for an older loved one, you can help by keeping track of appointments, organizing health information and test results, supporting heart-healthy meals and routines, encouraging medications to be taken as prescribed, and helping them follow their healthcare provider's recommendations.

Remember, one cholesterol number doesn't tell the whole story. Healthcare providers consider cholesterol results alongside other factors when discussing an individual's heart health.

This Cholesterol Education Month, don't just guess about your heart health—know your numbers, ask questions, and stay informed. 🩺💜

When was the last time you or your loved one had your cholesterol checked?

🛒💜 From Grocery Store to Refrigerator: Keeping Food Safe

Food safety doesn't begin when you turn on the stove—it starts at the grocery store.
For older adults, safe food handling is an important part of healthy living. From choosing food at the store to storing leftovers at home, a few simple habits can help reduce the risk of foodborne illness.

🛒 Shop smart: Choose refrigerated and frozen foods toward the end of your trip, check dates, and avoid damaged, leaking, or unusually swollen packages.

🥩 Keep foods separated: Keep raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs away from ready-to-eat foods whenever possible.

❄️ Refrigerate promptly: Perishable foods and leftovers should not sit at room temperature for too long. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours, or within1 hour when temperatures are above 90°F.

🏷️ Stay organized: Label leftovers with dates and keep your refrigerator organized so older foods can be used first. When in doubt about whether a perishable food has been stored safely, it's better to throw it out than take a risk.

🌱 Healthy aging and food safety go hand in hand. During Healthy Aging Month, we talked about nutritious choices, physical activity, and overall wellness. Making safe food choices helps ensure that the healthy meals we prepare are actually safe to enjoy.

For caregivers, food safety can become part of the everyday routine:
✔️ Wash hands before preparing food
✔️ Keep raw and cooked foods separate
✔️ Check the refrigerator regularly
✔️ Use safe cooking temperatures
✔️ Store leftovers properly

A little attention in the kitchen can go a long way toward protecting someone you love. 💜

🧓💜 Healthy Aging Starts with Safe Food
Eating well is an important part of healthy aging—but making sure food is safe to eat matters just as much. 🥗

As we age, our bodies can become more vulnerable to serious illness caused by foodborne germs. That’s why practicing safe food handling is especially important for adults 65 and older.

A simple way to remember the basics is Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill:
🧼Clean — Wash hands, utensils, and food-preparation surfaces.
🥩Separate — Keep raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs away from ready-to-eat foods.
🌡️Cook — Use a food thermometer to make sure food reaches a safe internal temperature.
❄️Chill — Refrigerate perishable foods and leftovers promptly.

For caregivers, food safety is part of everyday care. From grocery shopping and meal preparation to organizing the refrigerator and storing leftovers, small precautions can help create a safer mealtime environment for an older loved one. 💜

Good nutrition helps nourish the body. Safe food helps protect it. Let’s make both part of healthy aging. 🥗💜

🏡💜 A Safer Home Starts with a Caring Team

For someone living with Alzheimer’s, familiar surroundings can sometimes become more challenging as changes in memory, judgment, balance, or awareness occur.

The good news? Small changes can make a meaningful difference. 💜

✨ Improve lighting in frequently used areas
🧹 Keep walkways clear of clutter and tripping hazards
🛁 Add appropriate bathroom safety features
🚪 Use simple labels or visual cues
🔥 Secure potentially hazardous household items
🪑 Keep frequently used belongings within easy reach

But creating a supportive environment goes beyond making the home physically safer. **Family involvement matters, too. 🤝

Family members can help caregivers provide more personalized support by sharing their loved one's routines, preferences, favorite activities, and important life experiences. Staying involved in care planning, communicating changes, maintaining meaningful visits, and sharing caregiving responsibilities can help create a more consistent and supportive experience.

💜 Dementia care isn't just about creating a safer home—it's about creating a place where your loved one feels understood, respected, comfortable, and included.

When families and care providers work together, everyone can play a part in making the caregiving journey more manageable.

🏡 Take a moment to look around your loved one's home.
What is one small change you could make today to help make their space safer or more comfortable?

And remember caregiving doesn't have to be a one-person job. Reaching out for support can make a difference for both your loved one and your family. 💜

💜 Alzheimer’s may change what someone can do—but it doesn’t mean they should stop being part of the things they love.

For someone living with Alzheimer’s, everyday activities may become more challenging over time. But with patience, encouragement, and the right support, they can still have opportunities to choose, participate, create, and connect. 🌷

Simple moments can carry so much meaning:
🌱 Watering plants
🍪 Helping prepare a favorite recipe
🧺 Folding towels
👕 Choosing an outfit
🎨 Coloring or creating art
🎶 Singing along to favorite songs
📸 Looking through family photos
🚶 Taking a gentle walk

The activity doesn’t have to be perfect—and it doesn’t have to be completed independently.

What matters is the opportunity to participate. 💜

Instead of asking, *“What can they no longer do?” try asking:

✨ “What can they still do, and how can I help them enjoy it?”

Because meaningful activities aren't just about keeping someone busy. They're about helping them continue to experience purpose, joy, dignity, and connection in everyday life.

🌷 What’s one simple activity your loved one has always enjoyed? Share it in the comments and let’s inspire more meaningful moments for families caring for someone with Alzheimer’s. 💜
