Amazon just put a robot factory in Texas.

Multi-billion plant in East Austin. 300 acres. 300 to 500 manufacturing and engineering jobs. They will build the robotics systems that move product in Amazon buildings. No tax breaks asked.

The software gets the press. The chassis, enclosures, brackets, stampings, and harnesses still have to get made.

Everyone will cover the primes.

Here’s what they’ll miss:

A surge order to Lockheed isn’t executed by Lockheed. It’s executed by thousands of sub-tier shops doing the machining, stampings, weldments, harnesses, and coatings that become missiles, subs, and vehicles.

The primes can’t surge unless the sub-tiers surge.

And most sub-tier shops are already quoting 2027 capacity.

The next 18 months will separate OEMs who locked in qualified domestic suppliers from OEMs explaining delays to a program office.

Everyone is going to talk about the chips. I’d look one layer down.

Before that building makes a single wafer, it has to be built and equipped. Frames, enclosure panels, brackets, chassis, bus bars, cable and wire harnesses, machined components, castings, tooling. Then the chips go into Optimus and Cybercab, which are stamped, molded, machined and wired products in their own right.

Projects this size don’t get sourced the month before they open. The shops that end up on the print are the ones quoting now.

$1.59 trillion. That is what America's factories have promised to build and have not shipped yet.

The Census Bureau released June durable goods numbers yesterday. New orders rose 0.3% to $334.8 billion, up three of the last four months. Strip out transportation and orders rose 0.6%.

Where the growth is concentrated: computers and electronics led June at +3.1%, up nine of the last ten months. Year to date against 2025, defense capital goods orders are up 41%, communications equipment up 34%, primary metals up 13%, and machinery up 12%.

The number worth sitting with is the backlog. Unfilled orders hit $1.59 trillion, up 8.2% from a year ago, while inventories grew 2.9%. Order books are filling nearly three times faster than inventory. Demand is landing on the shop floor, not the warehouse shelf.

When backlogs stretch like this, the parts that hold up programs are usually the custom ones: machined housings, stampings, castings, molded components, enclosures, harnesses, and electronic assemblies.

The top three primes are sitting on roughly $557B in combined backlog, with direction to ramp munitions and interceptors (Aviation Week, on Deloitte’s analysis). The bottleneck isn’t innovation. It’s throughput.

We see it at the sub-tier every day. The programs hitting rate are the ones with qualified processes, real capacity below the primes, and clean documentation on every part that ships.
