Two words carry this whole video: Since 1969.

A buyer sending out a drawing for an enclosure or a cable assembly isn't looking for the newest option. They want the part right and on time. They also want a team that still picks up the phone next year.

That's hard to say in 25 seconds, so we didn't try. We put the year on the screen and let it sit there.

Then the work: we cut, we form, we machine. The parts end up inside data centers, medical devices, defense programs and heavy trucks.

RFQ out for 3 weeks. Still no quote.
Lead time promised at 6 weeks. Now it's 14.

If you buy sheet metal, machined parts, molded parts, PCBAs or cable assemblies, you've probably lived some version of this.

Here's how we handle it at Lupton:
→ Send us the drawing, material, annual volume and timing.
→ We quote it and we build it.
→ You get a straight answer on quote timing and lead time up front, not after the PO.

Prototyping a hardware product used to take a factory, a supply chain and a big check just to learn if anyone wanted it.

Not anymore.

Today someone can describe a part to an AI tool and get editable CAD back. Print it overnight on a $300 desktop printer. Order a small run of circuit boards for under $100. Sell the first units on Shopify or Kickstarter before building the rest.

I think we're about to see a wave of new hardware and robotics founders. People who never would have touched manufacturing are going to show up with a working prototype and real customers.

Here's the part nobody's talking about.

Getting to 10 units is easy now. Getting to 5,000 is still hard.

The printed version won't survive production. The part needs to be redesigned for stamping, molding or machining. Tolerances matter. Tooling costs matter. Lead times matter. And the cheapest overseas quote isn't cheap once you count the second sample, the missed ship date and the parts that don't fit.

That's where a lot of good products stall. It's also exactly the work we do every day at Lupton.

If you're one of these new founders:

1. Have us look at your drawing before you lock the design. Twenty minutes now can save a tooling rework later.
2. Get a domestic quote next to the overseas one. Compare landed cost and lead time, not just unit price.
3. Plan the jump from prototype to production early. Printed parts and production parts are rarely the same design.

The tools got cheap. The manufacturing knowledge didn't.

Your bracket has three suppliers. Which one owns the fit?

One shop cuts it. Another forms it. A third coats it.

Your best supplier is also your biggest single point of failure.
Here’s what day eleven of a supplier gone quiet looks like. The unanswered “delivery update?” thread. The circled ship date that already slipped. Your customer asking questions you can’t answer yet.
And the worst part: every hour you spend hunting a second source on your own is an hour your competitor doesn’t have to.
That hunt is the part we’ve already done. We work with qualified shops all over the U.S., and when a source goes quiet, we already know who runs your part family — who has the equipment, the capacity, and the quote path ready.

Amazon just put a robot factory in Texas.

Multi-billion plant in East Austin. 300 acres. 300 to 500 manufacturing and engineering jobs. They will build the robotics systems that move product in Amazon buildings. No tax breaks asked.

The software gets the press. The chassis, enclosures, brackets, stampings, and harnesses still have to get made.

Everyone will cover the primes.

Here’s what they’ll miss:

A surge order to Lockheed isn’t executed by Lockheed. It’s executed by thousands of sub-tier shops doing the machining, stampings, weldments, harnesses, and coatings that become missiles, subs, and vehicles.

The primes can’t surge unless the sub-tiers surge.

And most sub-tier shops are already quoting 2027 capacity.

The next 18 months will separate OEMs who locked in qualified domestic suppliers from OEMs explaining delays to a program office.
