Three NRA course coming up in December:

December 9th: Basics of Shotgun Shooting
December 10th: Basics of Rifle Shooting
December 16th and 17th: NRA Concealed Carry Weapons course. NOT the NYS Pistol Permit Course.

All classes are at the Tioga County Sportsmen's Association, generally from 7:45 to 5 PM.
Cost is $100 per day, plus ammunition or firearm rental if needed.

The New York Crossbow Coalition announced Wednesday that Senate Bill S6360A and its Assembly counterpart A8330A were signed into law by the Governor as of August 26, 2025. The bill takes effect immediately.
This legislation makes key updates to the Environmental Conservation Law, focusing on the use of crossbows for hunting:
+ Redefines “long bow” to include longbows, recurve bows, compound bows, and crossbows.
+ Removes outdated restrictions on crossbow design, such as limb width, draw weight, and bolt length.
+ Allows crossbows for big game hunting in all areas where longbows are permitted, and removes prior limitations on crossbow use during archery and muzzle-loading seasons.
+ Requires a bowhunting privilege to hunt with a crossbow under the new law. Previously, a muzzleloader privilege could be used — this has now changed. Going forward, anyone wishing to hunt with a crossbow must purchase and hold the archery license privilege.
Because the law is effective immediately, these updates apply to the 2025 hunting season. Hunters using crossbows this fall will now be required to have a bowhunting privilege in addition to their hunting license. Completion of bowhunter education training and an education certificate is required to purchase a bowhunting privilege. This can be achieved by an in-person or an online course.

Thinking Ahead: Gov Hochul will likely sign the new crossbow legislation that redefines a crossbow as a bow (instead of a muzzleloader...) and makes them legal during all of archery season. When this happens people will need a bowhunting license to use a crossbow. To0 get one, people must take a Bowhunter Education course, which has some homework that must be done in order to attend the class. In-person lasses are free, and you can find one at:

Bowhunter Education is required to hunt ONLY deer and bear with bow and arrow. It is recommended for all other game. This course covers safety techniques and responsible, ethical hunting practices when pursuing game with a bow.

The next to last publicly scheduled class of the year is full and will be the NRA's Personal Protection Outside The Home class, next weekend at the Tioga County Sportsmen's Association!

The Shotguns for Home Defense II on September 6th will round out the training year. If you are interested, you must have an introductory course first, so it is not too late. Let us know and we will see if we can work it out to get you that class. If you have already taken one somewhere else, please message us to discuss. Thanks!

The NRA Rifle Instructor course is the next course up, on May 9-10th. You must have taken the NRA Basics of Rifle Shooting course to be eligible for this course.

The NRA Chief Range Safety Officer course is posted to the NRA website, for May 20th...a Tuesday.

An NRA Shotgun Instructor class is scheduled for May 30-31st. You must have had the NRA Basics of Shotgun Shooting class to be eligible for this class.

Had a terrific Shotguns for Home Defense 1 class last weekend. Half the class was new students and half returning students who had taken previous classes. New skills and techniques learned and no sore shoulders after about 100 rounds each!

The Tioga County Sportsmen's Association is offering the NYS required Pistol Permit training class on May 17-18th. The cost is $300 for the 18 hour training and includes instruction, range training, handgun familiarization, lunches and snacks both days, handgun rental and ammunition. Give Mom a terrific Mother's Day gift of an all expense paid weekend at the Tioga County Sportsmen's Association and still take her out to brunch on Mother's Day! Additionally, we are now able to offer a new, four hour seminar on personal protection and crime prevention, Refuse To Be A Victim®
