My goodness, it has been a crazy spring. We tried to get an early jump on the vineyard but the weather was less than cooperative in February and March. Despite the fact that the grapes broke later than they ever have for us, we didn’t get near as much done before foliage break as we had hoped but we are grateful as the late storms didn’t seem to impact them much. The Riesling and Cabernet Franc are the only ones that we fear will be very low yielding while others are looking really good. Needless to say, after being gone on a much-needed vacation for 9 days we now feel like we are a month behind.
While the weather kept us out of the vineyard, the winery has been keeping us busy since last fall despite the fact that Colorado had a terrible grape growing year. After much thought, we decided to remain true to our roots and did not bring in any fruit from outside the borders of Colorado. We did not harvest any local grapes what so ever and only procurred a half ton each of two grape varietals from the Western Slope. As a result, we tried our hand at apple again this year, as the yield was good on our local trees. The other new fruit we chose is peach…of course from Palisade.
This weekend we will be serving the new ‘Fresh Squeeze’, the first full bottling of the peach. We did a trial batch (that we called ‘Fuzzy Navel’ but the name was not approved) a couple of months ago that was very well received. After a few more weeks to mature and sweetening slightly – we think we have a winner.
Also, this weekend – ‘Franc and Jack’. This popular accident of several years ago – we have finally found a winning combination and feel like it stands up to our expectations and is now in the bottle. For those that are not aware, this is a Cabernet Franc and Verona blend that has been aged on Jack Daniels Whiskey Barrel Oak. Smooth, fragrant and easy to sip.
Another new blend on the table this week, is a new batch of ‘Casual Touch’. A sweet, fruity red blend with touches of raspberry and blueberry.
Most of you are aware that Legatum Cellars is for sale. We have decided, that while we love what we do, our customers and the place itself, we have fulfilled our dream and it is time to pass the baton on to others that can expand on what we have started. It is our hope and prayer that the right buyers will step in and transfer seamlessly into our shoes with fresh ideas and dreams of their own. Until we actually sell, we will continue to be open every Saturday from noon – 5pm, with free tasting and no reservations necessary.
When you stop in, feel free to wander out into the vineyard with a glass ($6) of wine to see how things are progressing. We are no longer offering charcuterie trays but you are welcome to bring a picnic/snack with you to enjoy with family and friends as you share a bottle in one of the gazebos while the kids play on the playground.
Hope to see you soon… 1704 Willow St, Canon City, CO 81212
