HR Hot Take
Culture isn’t free snacks, company swag, or motivational posters in the breakroom.
Culture is how employees feel on Sunday night before the workweek starts.
Do they feel supported? Respected? Valued? Or anxious, drained, and already counting down to Friday?
The strongest workplace cultures are built through leadership, communication, trust, and consistency — not perks alone.

Busy doesn’t always mean productive.

A busy team looks like:
• Constant activity
• Lots of meetings
• Reactive work
• Unclear priorities

A productive team looks like:
• Clear expectations
• Focused work
• Defined processes
• Aligned goals

One feels like progress.
The other actually creates it.

If your team is always “busy” but things still feel off…
it’s usually not a people problem — it’s a structure problem.

And that’s exactly what we help fix.

Your first 3 hires will shape more than you think.

They set the tone for:
• Work ethic
• Communication
• Accountability
• Culture

In the early stages, there’s no buffer.
Every habit — good or bad — gets amplified.

If you hire people who take initiative, communicate clearly, and align with your standards…
you build momentum.

If you don’t?
You end up spending more time fixing issues than growing your business.

Hiring early isn’t just about filling roles — it’s about building your foundation.

And if you’re not sure you’re hiring the right way, it might be time to get some support. Contact us now to see how we can support your new business!

Your hiring process is saying more than you think.

And not just to you… to every candidate that comes through it.

Slow responses?
It signals disorganization.

Unclear interviews?
It shows a lack of structure.

Last-minute scheduling?
It reflects poor planning.

Whether you realize it or not, your hiring process is giving candidates a preview of what it’s like to work for you.

And the best candidates? They’re paying attention.

A strong hiring process doesn’t just help you evaluate talent — it helps you attract the right people in the first place.

Because hiring isn’t just about who you choose…
it’s about who chooses you, too.

Short answer: Yes… but that doesn’t mean you should.

Georgia is an at-will employment state, which means employers can terminate employees at any time, with or without notice, for almost any reason.

But here’s where it gets tricky...

You still can’t terminate someone for:
🚫 Discrimination (protected classes)
🚫 Retaliation (like reporting harassment or violations)
🚫 Violating any written employment agreements or policies

And from a business standpoint:
Firing without documentation or a clear process can lead to:
- Legal disputes
- Unemployment claims issues
- Team morale problems

The smartest move?
✔ Document performance issues
✔ Follow consistent processes
✔ Make sure your policies back you up

Just because you can… doesn’t mean it’s the best decision for your business.

Let’s talk Employee Classification — because getting this wrong can cost you.

It determines whether someone is:
• Exempt (no overtime)
• Non-exempt (eligible for overtime)

It’s governed by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) — and it’s not just about salary.

To qualify as exempt, employees must meet:
• Salary requirements
• Specific job duty tests

Common mistakes:
• Assuming salary = exempt
• Misclassifying roles
• Not updating roles as they change

What that can lead to:
• Back pay
• Penalties
• Compliance issues

Bottom line:
It’s not about the title — it’s about the work being done.

Let’s be honest… bad hires don’t just “happen” — they build up over time.

Here’s what it usually looks like...

- Rushed job posting
- Unclear expectations
- Weak interview process
- Hiring based on personality instead of qualifications
- No structured onboarding

…and then 3 weeks later:
“Why isn’t this working?”

A bad hire is rarely one big mistake.
It’s a series of small ones that were never addressed.

The fix? Systems. Structure. Strategy.

That’s where we come in!

“Let’s just figure it out as we go.”

Sounds harmless… until it’s not.

Winging your HR might look like:
– No real onboarding process
– Inconsistent policies
– Unclear expectations
– Random hiring decisions

But behind the scenes, it costs you:
💸 Higher turnover
💸 Slower productivity
💸 More mistakes
💸 Constant firefighting

A solid HR system doesn’t slow you down, it creates consistency, protects your business, and helps your team actually perform.

Structure isn’t corporate… it’s scalable.

If you’re tired of reacting instead of leading, it might be time to build something better.

Not every labor law update comes in the form of a flashy new rule…
but that doesn’t mean you’re in the clear.

Here’s what’s actually happening in Georgia right now:

✔ Administrative rule updates went into effect at the start of 2026
✔ Ongoing wage and employment legislation is still evolving
✔ Increased focus on compliance, classification, and enforcement

And one of the most overlooked compliance risks?

Your required workplace postings!

Georgia law requires you to display key notices like:
– Workers’ compensation
– Unemployment insurance
– Equal pay rights

And yes… even small businesses are required to have them visible in the workplace. And let’s be real — most business owners aren’t checking labor law updates weekly.

That’s where HR Nerd comes in.

Because staying compliant in Georgia isn’t about reacting when something goes wrong…
it’s about having systems in place before it does.

If you’re not sure your business is covered, it might be time to take a closer look!

Not all red flags scream… some whisper

And if you don’t know what to look for, you’ll miss them.

- Vague job titles with no real responsibilities
- Zero metrics or measurable results
- Buzzwords with no substance
- Job hopping with no clear growth story

A resume shouldn’t just tell you where someone worked…
It should show you how they made an impact.

Because the wrong hire doesn’t just cost money... it costs time, energy, and team morale.
