You turn on the laptop and instead of your login screen, there is a blue screen asking for a 48-digit recovery key. BitLocker, it says. You have never heard that word in your life.
That chest-tightening feeling is the worst. But the drive is not broken and your files are not gone. Windows just wants the key it quietly saved to your Microsoft account during setup.
First thing to try: on that blue screen, look for the recovery options and choose to continue to Windows. If it lets you in, go straight to your BitLocker settings and save that key somewhere physical. Not on the computer. On paper, in a drawer.
