Training Tuesday: Treating Heat-Related Emergencies 🥵

Each month, the Cape Coral Fire Department holds a medical in-service to keep our firefighter EMTs and paramedics up to date on the latest emergency care practices. This month's training featured Medical Director Dr. Lee, who discussed the timely and important topic of recognizing and treating heat-related emergencies.

As temperatures continue to rise, we encourage everyone to prevent heat-related illnesses by:
💧 Staying hydrated.
🧢 Taking breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
☀️ Avoiding prolonged outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.

In addition, it is important to recognize the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and know what actions to take if someone is affected.

Stay cool, stay safe, and stay hydrated, Cape Coral!

Yesterday evening, Brush 7, Brush 10, Brush 11, Brush 13, Engine 10, Ladder 5, Tender 8, and Battalion 2 responded to a brush fire in Yellow Creek Preserve alongside North Fort Myers Fire Control District and the Florida Forest Service. The fire was contained to approximately 5 acres, and no homes were threatened. This was one of several brush fires last night that were sparked by lightning strikes.

Firefighters are returning to the scene this morning to extinguish remaining hot spots, while the Florida Forest Service continues work to strengthen and clean up the fire line.

This morning Engine 9 and Rescue 9 responded to a call of a dog in a canal in Britannia Lake. It swam from shore to shore as firefighters tried to rescue it. Denae Judd offered to help from her kayak. She monitored its location and let the crew know it had crawled up under a dock. Firefighters entered the water and were able to extract what turned out to be a coyote pup from the space. It was exhausted from its ventures and unable to be released. Crews took it to East West Veterinary Care Center who will coordinate moving it to CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc. for rehabilitation. For her assistance with this unique situation, firefighters presented Denae with a Community Recognition Coin.

We also want to recognize a nearby neighbor, Brian. We learned that he is the one who originally saw the coyote fall in the lake. He even jumped in after to try to get it! His efforts caught the attention of other neighbors who called 9-1-1 and Denae. We werent able to get a photo, but firefighters stopped by this afternoon to present him with a coin as well.

This save was a great team effort!!

Awkward… 🫣🚒🚨

If you see flashing lights behind you, stay calm and move to the edge of the road. And never try to pass an emergency vehicle or block intersections. We thank you! 🤗

June is National Safety Month and the focus for this week was Staying Safe on the Roads. We thought we would take this opportunity to highlight some of the hazards, distractions, and dangers your Cape Coral firefighters have encountered on the roads in just the past two weeks. These have included: a turtle crossing the street, a cat trapped in an engine compartment, traffic crashes, and both a car and motorcycle fire.

These incidents serve as a reminder that the unexpected can happen at any time. Whether you’re driving, riding, or walking, always stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Help keep our roads safe by obeying traffic laws, avoiding distractions, wearing your seatbelt, ensuring car seats are properly installed, and keeping your vehicle well maintained.
