Protect Our Owls: Choose Wildlife-Safe Rodent Control

Marco Island is home to the second-largest population of burrowing owls in the state of Florida – the island plays a key role in their conservation. Burrowing owls are well-loved by the community and are the focus of Audubon Western Everglades' (AWE) Owl Watch program, which celebrated 10 years of owl monitoring and research last year.

After tracking high mortality, AWE Owl Watch discovered that burrowing owls were dying of rat poison in their systems. The City of Marco Island has taken the incredible step in removing rat poison from all city properties! Additionally, sealing buildings is an important step in prevention and a long-term solution for both residential and commercial buildings.

There is no reason for any business on Marco Island to have rat poison on the property. Seal the building and the problem ends.

Grateful to be named among the partners building a poison-free Marco Island. When a community chooses to close the door on rodents instead of pointlessly poisoning the predators that hunt them, the whole ecosystem wins. Thank you Brittany Piersma and Audubon Western Everglades for the vision and the science behind it.

What began as a mission to save birds of prey led to the eye-opening realization of the insufficient and damaging methods used by many pest control companies to manage rats.

Poison doesn’t stay in the bait box.

It moves through the food chain, killing wildlife, pets, and non-target animals that were never on the label.

It’s usually chosen for one of two reasons:

1. It’s cheaper.
2. The better alternative was never offered.

A bait box may cost less than repairing a building.

But if the building isn’t sealed, the rats are still entering. Now they’re just dying in your walls and spreading poison through the food chain.

Poison is like setting off a bomb to kill one mouse. It gets everything you didn’t aim at — and the mice keep coming back through the same hole

It’s not a mouse problem, it’s a house problem.

Honored to have a table at the Audubon Western Everglades 10-year owl watch anniversary event today on Marco Island. Seeing the City of Marco Island’s rat poison-free program — built on structural exclusion and non-toxic monitoring — presented to a full room was something. This is what it looks like when a community decides to solve the problem. Proud to be part of it.

Great event at Mackle Park (the same Mackle Park we rodent proofed!) with Audubon Western Everglades.

Most people think rodent problems are solved with poison or traps…

But if the building stays open… the next animal moves in.

Seal the structure. End the chemical cycle. It goes for all “pests”. Have a higher standard for your home.
