On a recent beach vacation in New England, I came upon 4 different horseshoe crab shells throughout the week, so I decided to learn more about these fascinating “living fossils.”
Did you know they have been around for over
450 MILLION years?
Horseshoe crabs grow by molting their outer shell. As they grow, the old shell becomes too small, and they leave it behind.
They simply outgrow it.
The horseshoe crab is actually a surprisingly beautiful metaphor for The KonMari Method—especially for letting go, renewal, living intentionally, and making space for what comes next.
The KonMari Method isn’t about getting rid of things simply because we have too much.
It’s about becoming more conscious of what we choose to surround ourselves with.
The horseshoe crab gives us a lovely natural example that applies to more than possessions.
Sometimes we outgrow a routine, an expectation, a role we’ve been playing, or an old definition of ourselves.
We don’t have to wait for a major life transition to release what no longer serves us.
Just as the horseshoe crab leaves behind its old shell and continues growing, we can make room for the next chapter of our lives.
