All Custodial Workers Deserve Safety and Respect
Custodians perform a vital front-line role in maintaining the hygiene and health of schools, hospitals and other public and commercial buildings. Custodial workers are exposed to Health and Safety Hazards on-a-daily-basis and historically suffer from workplace related illness and injury at twice the average rate for all workers in private industry.
The current COVID19 pandemic has placed custodial workers in the spotlight and has highlighted their high risk of exposure to coronavirus and other infectious microorganisms. Due to the nature of their work, custodians are often exposed to ingredients in some chemicals that can be quite hazardous – corrosive to eyes and skin, highly toxic, absorbed through the skin, and can cause breathing problems like asthma.
To meet and manage the challenges of today’s public health concerns and expectations, all custodians must be equipped with the professional training and personal protective equipment essential to safe cleaning best practices.
To all custodians I salute you and thank you for your service!
