Illinois’ adult-use cannabis market is showing continued demand, with nearly 4.9 million items sold in August 2026 — a 9% increase compared with August 2025, according to WGN’s report on the state’s annual cannabis report.

More than 5 million adult-use items were sold in July. During fiscal year 2026, Illinois also issued 29 operational dispensary licenses, increasing the number of retail locations by more than 10%.

State regulators conducted 755 dispensary inspections during the fiscal year, up from 625 the previous year.

The City of Carbondale is exploring a potential redevelopment of the University Mall property that could include a water park, hotel, retail, restaurants and other entertainment attractions.

The City Council unanimously agreed Tuesday to consult with a legal team about establishing a STAR Bonds District that would include the property. The economic development tool helps offset business development costs and has also been used in Marion with the Oasis projects.

City Manager Stan Reno said the city has been working with the mall’s owners and potential developers, with the goal of attracting more businesses and foot traffic to Carbondale.

Reno said the city has submitted its interest to the state. The next step is defining the proposed district’s boundaries for state approval. The entertainment complex remains a proposed concept.

The third annual SIU Homecoming Music Street Festival returns to The Strip on Illinois Avenue this Friday, October 16, beginning at 3 p.m. The free, all-ages celebration will feature two stages of live entertainment, food trucks and street vendors in downtown Carbondale.

The Egyptian Stage, located in the First Mid Bank parking lot, will feature Lucas Wayne & the Cottonmouths with City of Soul from 3–3:45 p.m., Johnny Rock-itt & the Double-Wide Symphony from 4–4:55 p.m., and line dancing with Cowboy Kyle from 5–5:50 p.m.

On the main Saluki Stage, North Mississippi Allstars will perform from 6–7:30 p.m., followed by headliner Spin Doctors from 8–9:30 p.m. KYLE will close out the scheduled performances with the SIU Student Afterparty from 10–11 p.m. Students, alumni and community members are invited to attend.

An occupied home sustained major damage on Monday, Oct. 12, after a vehicle left the roadway and struck the residence in the 400 block of North University Avenue.

The Carbondale Police and Fire departments responded to the single-vehicle crash. According to police, no one inside the home was injured.

The driver was transported to a hospital for examination but did not appear to have any significant injuries.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale researchers are combining wildlife fieldwork with artificial intelligence to help the Illinois Department of Natural Resources determine the best ways to estimate deer population density.

Led by zoology doctoral student Seth Morelock, the study compares trail cameras, vehicle surveys using thermal imagery and drones based on logistics, cost and accuracy. Fieldwork began in fall 2025 at locations across Illinois, including SIU’s Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center and the Shawnee National Forest.

Computer science doctoral students Toqi Tahamid Sarker and Taminul Islam developed AI tools to support the research. Sarker’s model estimates a deer’s distance from a trail camera, while Islam’s model detects and counts deer in thermal images, tracking them across frames to reduce repeat counting.

The findings could help IDNR make wildlife management decisions, including setting harvest limits. Additional surveys are planned, and researchers say it is too early for preliminary findings. The most useful method may vary by location.

Vulture Fest returns to Makanda this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 17–18, featuring more than 50 artists, food, shopping and live music.

Performances at the Pavilion begin at noon each day. Saturday’s lineup includes Jobey Grant, Bite Risk and Pet Mosquito, while Sunday features John Till, Mark Stoffel & The Kitchen Table Crew, and Lucas Wayne & The Cottonmouths.

Music at Rainmaker’s Garden begins at 12:30 p.m. both days. Saturday’s performers are Barry Cloyd, Sarah Lannom & David Lawrence, and Snowbird Street Band. Sunday’s lineup includes Uncle John & The Resistance, The Natives and Loose Gravel.

Thirteen former Saluki mascots will return as grand marshals of SIU Carbondale’s 2026 Homecoming Parade, beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, through downtown Carbondale.

The group wore the mascot costume between the early 1990s and 2018 and will be recognized during this year’s celebration, themed “Decades of the Dawg: 75 Years of Saluki Pride.” They will ride aboard a tram in the parade and participate in other festivities throughout the day.

Among those returning are Carbondale’s Peter Fox and Nicholas Steinberger, along with Marion’s Gabriel D. Herbst. SIU is honoring the former mascots for their contributions to campus traditions and school spirit.

The parade will also feature SIU’s 10 Homecoming royalty candidates. Online student voting runs Oct. 12–15, with the two highest vote-getters crowned during halftime of Saturday’s football game against Illinois State. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.

SIU Carbondale will host five free, public brown-bag lunch talks Oct. 12–16 for Earth Science Week, exploring environmental challenges and the minerals that support everyday life.

This year’s theme is “Critical Minerals for a Thriving Society.” The event schedule includes:

• Monday, Oct. 12: Lahiru Jayakody discusses plastic pollution.
Time: Noon–1 p.m.
Location: Parkinson Building, Room 101F, SIU Carbondale.

• Tuesday, Oct. 13: Erik Brevik explores how minerals support agriculture and food production.
Time: Noon–1 p.m.
Location: Parkinson Building, Room 101F, SIU Carbondale.

• Wednesday, Oct. 14: Scott Hamilton-Brehm and Daniel Hummer discuss finding critical rare earth metals and how microbes could help harvest them.
Time: Noon–1 p.m.

• Thursday, Oct. 15: James Conder examines earthquake causes and patterns.
