Oaks (Quercus spp.) should be celebrated all year but Illinois Oak Awareness Month, or "oaktober" gives us a good excuse to discuss the many benefits of these hardwoods.
Oak trees are a keystone species, meaning they support large numbers of species in a local ecosystem and many directly rely on them for survival. Oak populations provide habitat and food for wildlife, support biodiverse ecosystems, contribute to improved air and water quality, provide shade benefits that help to reduce energy use, and so much more! Another benefit is that as Oak trees age, most will develop cavity holes that many species use for shelter and nesting especially during the winter months.
Illinois has around 20 native Oak (Quercus) species but a range map should be used when identifying Oaks because some are absent in certain areas of Illinois. The labeled pictures below are a few examples of Oaks (Quercus spp.) and the animals that rely on them in Illinois.
