Most kids are returning to school this week (including our own!) and we wanted to take a moment to recognize the teachers who help our kids have amazing futures. Thank you all so much for what you do! (Especially those who have to deal with our crazy kiddo!!)

It's Shrimp Fest week! The Delcambre Shrimp Festival is one of our favorite events in Acadiana. We will be out there this Saturday! Who else is going??

🦐 Did you know the Delcambre Shrimp Festival has been around for 76 years?

The festival started in 1950 as the Iberia Parish Shrimp Festival and Agricultural Fair—originally as a fundraiser for the Delcambre Fire Department. It eventually became the Delcambre Shrimp Festival in 1974.

But the coolest part is that this isn't just a festival about shrimp. It grew directly out of the community's sh*****ng culture.

The Delcambre Canal, first dredged in 1906, connected the town to Vermilion Bay and the Gulf, helping turn Delcambre into a major sh*****ng community. ⚓

And then things got wonderfully Louisiana:

👑 The first festival queen was crowned in 1950.

👑 In 1954, the first festival king was a doctor—Dr. Adolph Landry.

🦐 In 1955, they created the title King Crustacean, originally awarded to the shrimp fisherman who brought in the biggest haul.

✝️ In 1953, the festival introduced the Blessing of the Shrimp Fleet, a tradition that continues today. The boats are blessed before heading back out onto the Gulf—a reminder that sh*****ng wasn't just a livelihood; it could be dangerous work.

🏛️ The permanent Shrimp Festival Building was completed in 1972.

And here's another cool bit of history: the festival began before the Interstate Highway System even existed.

What started as a small community fundraiser grew into one of Louisiana's iconic festivals—complete with shrimp boats, Cajun food, music, dancing, royalty, and a whole lot of shrimp.

So when you watch the boats during the Blessing of the Fleet, you're not just watching a parade.

You're watching 76 years of Delcambre history floating down the canal. 🦐⚓

King Crustacean. I mean… come on. That's about as Louisiana as it gets. 😂
