🔥 It’s Fire Prevention Week! 🔥

This week is a good reminder that fire safety isn’t something we should think about only when there’s a fire. This year, the National Fire Protection Association is focusing on lithium-ion battery safety and the way we charge the devices we use every day — from phones and laptops to power tools, toys, e-bikes and scooters.

A few simple habits can make a big difference. Use the charger and cord made for your device, charge on a hard, flat surface instead of a bed or couch, unplug it when it’s fully charged, and never use a battery that is swollen, damaged, leaking, unusually hot, or making strange sounds.

We’ve attached a few safety sheets from the NFPA with more information about lithium-ion battery safety and safe charging. Take a few minutes to look them over and share them with your family.

At Midwest Fire Safety, we believe protecting your home and the people you love starts with being prepared. Take a few minutes this week to check your smoke alarms, talk to your family about fire safety, and take a look at how and where you’re charging your devices.

Fire Prevention Week is the perfect time to make sure your home is ready before you need it.

From all of us at Midwest Fire Safety, we offer our deepest sympathies to the family and everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy. Keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers.

On Saturday, July 4, at approximately 10:20 am, Sumpter Township police and fire were dispatched to a residence on Executive Dr. after two children, ages 8 and 12, were found lying inside the garage, not breathing, where a portable gas-powered generator was operating during a power outage following Friday’s storms. Sadly, attempts to resuscitate them were unsuccessful.

Our sincere condolences go out to the family during this difficult time.

This tragedy is a stark reminder of the dangers of Carbon Monoxide. Please remember:

- Never run a generator inside a home, garage, basement, shed, or other enclosed area, only outdoors, well away from doors, windows, and vents.

- Ensure your home has working carbon monoxide (CO) detectors.
