The beach is nature’s playground, and we had a blast transforming it into an inclusive venue for people living with neurological conditions, and their families and caregivers, at our 11th annual Surf Away+.

With the help of Ionis volunteers and partners, we facilitated adaptive and accessible activities to engage and delight attendees, including music and movement, sensory activations from tidepool tanks to STEM learning, workshops that included art, mindfulness and improv, adaptive surfing, pickleball, volleyball and more.

Surf Away+ is a day for the whole family, and this year we celebrated siblings and the important role they play alongside parents and caregivers.

We want to extend a huge thank-you to all participants, family members, partners and volunteers who made this a day of joy and support for such a deserving community.

Partners: Adapt, Challenged Athletes Foundation, Waves4all

Resources: Angelman Syndrome Foundation, Rare Mamas, Raregivers, Pawsitive Teams, Inc., Resounding Joy Inc.

It was a pleasure to join more than 2,000 members of the (AS) community at the Angelman Syndrome Foundation’s Family Conference and Research Symposium in Aurora, Colorado last week.

The power of this event lies in creating opportunities for community members to connect, learn from one another and build new skills and for researchers and clinicians to share the latest advancements in care.

A key theme this year was transitions. AS is not just a childhood disease and can affect people of all ages. Attendees were encouraged to consider how families can prepare to transition someone with AS into a new school or adult care setting. Learn more here: https://angelman.org/asgrowsup/
