Fifty years ago today, the "Judgment of Paris" changed the course of wine history forever. Among the few chosen to represent the potential of American winemaking was our 1974 Chalone Vineyard Chardonnay.

When the dust settled and the French judges turned in their ballots, the message was clear: Chalone had secured a historic 3rd place finish, outranking some of France’s most prestigious wines and proving that California didn’t just belong on the world stage - it was setting the standard.

Today, we raise a glass to the pioneers, the risk-takers, and the rugged limestone soils that proved greatness knows no borders.

Today marks the start of a very special month at Chalone Vineyard. This May, we are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Judgment of Paris—the historic event where our 1974 Chardonnay took 3rd place and changed the world’s perception of California wine forever.

To kick off this milestone month, we are officially pouring our 2024 Estate Chardonnay: Judgment of Paris 50th Anniversary Edition. Awarded 95 points by Tasting Panel, this commemorative vintage is a tribute to that podium finish, featuring decadent notes of crème brûlée, mango, and lemon cookie.

This Earth Day, we're reflecting on the philosophy that has guided Chalone from the very beginning.

Great wine starts with great stewardship. Every decision we make in the vineyard - from how we manage water across our remote, rugged terrain, to the cover crops we plant to support beneficial insects, to the extensive hand labor required on our hillside vines - is rooted in a deep respect for this land and what it naturally gives us.

We follow the Burgundian principle that the finest vineyards regulate themselves. Our limestone soils, unique microclimate, and low-vigor vines do much of the work; our role is simply to listen, tend, and get out of the way.
