In 2022, the Federal Reserve began raising interest rates from near zero, creating disruption in private markets. As borrowing costs rose rapidly, private deal activity, exits, and fundraising slowed dramatically.

Private credit was a relative bright spot because its predominantly floating-rate loans generated more income as rates increased. Still, higher interest expense placed greater pressure on leveraged companies and created a more challenging environment for private equity and real estate.

The 25-year chart of the 10-year Treasury yield points to an important technical test, with yields approaching the 5.45%–5.50% resistance zone after a sharp move higher. A decisive weekly close above this range would strengthen the case for a breakout and bring the next upside targets near 5.65%, 5.80%, and 6.00% into focus.

Throughout September, members of Team Goelzer continued to take part in community events.

We started early this month, by sponsoring and attending the Philanthropy Leads Conference presented September 1-3 by the Indiana Philanthropy Alliance. As a principal sponsor of the event, Goelzer also hosted an opening night dinner Commission Row. On September 16, the annual Huddle Against Hunger event, presented by the Indianapolis Colts and Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana Inc., was held at Lucas Oil Stadium. Attendees’ support helped raise funds to help Hoosiers facing food insecurity.

We visited the Indianapolis Marriott North on September 19 for the Bourbon, Bling & Bow Ties Gala. Hosted annually by Indiana Wish, the event raises funds to grant wishes for Hoosier children aged 3 to 18 who face critical or life-threatening illnesses.

The IndyGo FoundationGolf Outing: Driving Access event at Eagle Creek Golf Club took place September 24, giving us a chance to practice our swings while helping to increase access to public transit in Marion County.

Finally, Goelzer participated in an activity for Foster Success, an organization that supports youth as they transition from foster care systems into our communities. On September 30, four employee teams competed to see who could pack the most care packages—eventually contributing 48 packages to add to Foster Success’s pantry.

As you can tell from the photos, we had a wonderful time—and we continue to be grateful for the opportunity to lend our support to positive initiatives shaping our city, state, and world.

Michelle Jann has spent more than 25 years helping people navigate the complexities of wealth. After graduating magna cm laude from DePauw University, she built her career around wealth planning, tax planning, and investment management—always with a focus on understanding the people behind the numbers.

Before joining Goelzer in 2016, Michelle held senior advisory roles where she developed comprehensive wealth plans and investment strategies tailored to her clients' unique needs.

Today, as Director of Wealth Planning and Senior Wealth Advisor at Goelzer, as well as a principal of our firm, Michelle works closely with multi-generational families through Goelzer Private Office, helping them develop thoughtful strategies for everything from advanced tax planning to estate and legacy planning.

A mentor’s influence can help young people reach their full potential—and the mentoring programs Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana(BBBSCI) will serve more than 1,400 young people ages 8 to 18 across Marion, Hamilton, and Johnson counties. Still, more than 1,100 other kids are still waiting for their own mentors.

On September 14, BBBSCI kicked off its week-long “Paint the Town Green” campaign to raise awareness around our community’s ongoing need for youth mentors. Our team participated by holding a “green” lunch on September 15, during which we wore green to show our support for BBBSCI’s initiative.

Others who supported the effort included AES Indiana, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indianapolis International Airport, and Pacers Sports & Entertainment—in total, almost 70 local businesses and organizations.
