Pete Rezac's class this past year has me all energized. I've resurrected my darkroom equipment from storage and I'm getting ready to take over one of the bathrooms in my house.

Remembering the late, Belgian born, photographer Martine Franck who was born on this day, April the 2nd in 1938.

An inspiring photographer she was a member of Magnum Photos for over three decades - amassing an impressive, significant, back catalogue of work.

Franck was married to Henri Cartier-Bresson - a symbiotic relationship which benefited both photographically.

Sadly it is probably fair to say that his fame overshadowed her work for many years - a balanced now being redressed as her work becomes more widely recognised and celebrated.

You can read more about her life and works via the link that I'll add in the comments section.

Remembering the late Arnold Newman, who was born on this day, March the 3rd, in 1918.

American photographer Newman was noted for his "environmental portraits" of artists and politicians. He was also known for his carefully composed abstract still life images.

On this day, February the 24th, in 1840,
French photographer Hippolyte Bayard publishes a description of his own photographic method.

Whilst it did not succeed in matching the impact of Daguerre's process Bayard's place in the history of photography can not be ignored.

The French born photographer was a true pioneer with his own process producing direct positive paper prints within the camera.

Bayard had previously presented the world's first public exhibition of photographs, in June 1839.

Bayard claimed to have invented photography earlier than Louis-Jacques Mandé Daguerre in France and William Henry Fox Talbot in England, the men traditionally credited with its invention, and there may well be credence in his claim.

He is seen here in a self portrait taken around 1855.
