Work is the glue that holds it all together. Once you are able to accurately visualize, internalize by owning your goals, and set powerful expectations, you can create a course of work and action that will deliver the results you seek. This is the fourth step.

Contemplate your goals in terms of VIEW.

Decide what you are willing to give and invest to achieve your goal. Nothing valuable or worthwhile comes at no cost, we believe. So what are you capable of bringing to the job of attaining what you really want in life?

Size up your goal
Have vision – and reach for the sky! Goals can and should stretch us in every way as we press forward to completion. The trick, we think, is to accurately visualize what you have a deep desire to own, have, or accomplish. The drive you’ll need to finish the work required can only come from an unquenchable internal fire to succeed. Dreams are very different from goals. Anyone and everyone can and should dream. Those who push onward to create and pursue goals are the ones who will see their dreams become their reality. Get a really good idea of just how big your goals' pursuit will be and you'll have an edge on everyone else.

Gather information
Fire, Ready, Aim never really works very well. It is the rule rather than the exception way too often. Be sure you have a good working knowledge of the path to your goal. Information is power, and you can avoid a lot of wasted time, energy, and resources by spending a practical amount of effort researching your goal. Please don’t get trapped into studying the goal to the exclusion of further action; just be sure of the details you can sensibly discover.

Assemble your tool kit
Set up a dedicated place to work if at all possible. Kitchen tables and garages have been the genesis of thousands of amazing accomplishments. No matter what your goal, in today’s world you’ll probably need a mobile phone or smartphone and a simple computer for telephone, email, texting, Internet, Skype, and the like. Create simple record keeping systems for contacts, calendaring, notes, and finances since these are the business basics. Take an online course if your goal requires more training or if you need to brush up on skills.

Set a work schedule
Since work is required, let’s work smart AND hard. How many hours a week will you commit and devote to your work? When can you schedule that work on a routine, predictable basis? Will your strategies call for days or evenings or both? Weekdays, weekends, or both? Put your availability into your calendar and stick to it. Keep track of your committed hours and be sure to fulfill them – after all, you’ll be the toughest boss you’ve ever worked for if you truly pursue your passion.

Review progress and retool if necessary
Rarely will everything go exactly as planned. It happens, but not very often. Be prepared to sit down for a quiet ½ hour on at least a weekly basis to review critical areas of progress and waypoints of accomplishment. It’s easy to get deep into the weeds of daily toil and never look up long enough to see if you’re still on the right track. This is hard to do in an objective way, but enlisting the help of a trusted adviser – an accountability partner – can yield tremendous results.

Recognize when you’ve hit the goal
When you’ve reached all the measures you’ve set as indicators your goals are met, be sure to recognize your own achievement and take a moment to enjoy the accomplishment. You’ll be in the company of a very rare group. It takes an amazing amount of self-discipline and sheer grit to push through the hard times and win the prize.

Expect, to us, carries a lot of meanings. Some are more nuanced than others, headed by the idea that we expect our goals to be met when we do our part to move forward. This is step three of four.

It’s not easy to sustain our faith in ourselves and our chosen goals over the long haul. Few people really can hold that vision for an extended period of time. So how can we strengthen our resolve to reach our goals?

Structure them
Write down a careful, thoughtful goal statement that captures your desire and passion in your own words. Read these regularly to remind yourself of where you are headed. Define how you will know you’ve reached each goal. Make plans and put them in motion.

Set time frames
Many have said a goal is a wish with a completion date deadline set. We think it’s a bit more than that, but not much. Commit to strive for a date certain when you will achieve each goal. It is surprising to see how much more we can accomplish in a day when a deadline is approaching.

Review progress
Daily or weekly, take ½ hour to sit quietly alone and review your goals. Measure how far along you are to completion, using your success definitions as guides.

Reframe
Be willing to identify and try new approaches if your first set of plans don’t yield the results you desire. Sometimes dogged persistence is necessary. Sometimes not so much. Tweak your plans here and there – or dump them in favor of new strategies. Judge by outcome.

Repeat
Simply repeat this cycle week in and week out. Be resolute in your decision to faithfully pursue your goals to successful completion.

Once you visualize a goal and desire, and can really see yourself living that dream, it’s time to internalize this vision. This is the second step of the four.

Contemplate your goals in terms of VIEW.
There’s a big difference between wishes and goals. Most of us wish for many things throughout our lives, but never really make the leap to pursuing those things as actual goals. That pursuit takes actual work and tenacity. That’s where internalizing drives achievement.

Prioritize now.

Select your top three or four desired goals, then quietly consider the priority of each. Write them down in your phone or on paper where you can review them often. Feel what it would be like to reach each goal: put yourself into the picture. Feel it is possible. Feel nothing is impossible. Make these few goals the emphasis of your thoughts morning, noon, and night.

Our lives are deeply affected by our own perspective. The best way to change what you see in your life is to change your VIEW.

Contemplate your goals in terms of VIEW.
Visualize carefully and completely the most important things you desire to achieve in your life. Take 30 minutes alone to delve into your thoughts.
Leave nothing out: home, family, spiritual, work, school, weight, business, finance, sports, and literally anything else you desire. Write down everything you can as it flows from your mind. No prioritizing necessary right now!

This first step is enlightening every time you do it. Today, tomorrow, in a week, a month, or a year later. Save your notes. You'll be amazed at so many outcomes that serve your innermost desires, once your goals are written and internalized.
