Do you have a staff member that thinks policies don't pertain to them?

Let's talk about your non-negotiables. You've probably heard me talk about mine in some of my tiktok videos, but if you're new here, your non negotiables should be 3-5 policies that you stick to with absolutely NO wiggle room. If this staff member is not holding themselves to your standards/policies, ESPECIALLY if we’re talking non-negotiables, then they need to go. If we’re talking policies like tardiness, then we just simply have a conversation with them and give them a ton of reminders and a possible write-up if it’s consistent and hindering the learning of students or co-teachers. However, this does go against their raises/bonuses when that time comes.

My non-negotiables are:
1. Counting your children through EVERY threshold.
2. Clipboards are ALWAYS up to date with the right children.
3. Only ONE teacher on their phone updating Brightwheel at a time.

The best thing you can do in order to build a successful business is to surround yourself with those that fully support you. This lifestyle is a rollercoaster and finding those that understand the ups AND downs of it is rare. Find the ones that remind you that the bad parts are temporary and the ones that have nothing but joy when you succeed. Those are your people.

Owning the best childcare center in Pittsburgh didn't happen on accident. It takes dedication day in and day out from myself, my leadership team, and my teachers to never settle. Picture this. You run a childcare center and your teacher turnover is going through the roof. How do you keep your staff?

Over the past few years we’ve seen teachers leaving this industry within the first year or two after teaching. Why? They aren’t supported. So, what are ways you can support them?

✨ Conduct classroom audits! There are so many ways to do this, but you need to ask your teachers, at a minimum, these three questions.
1. Is there anything you, the teachers, need to make your room run more smoothly?
2. Is there anything your children need?
3. What does your classroom need a whole?

✨ Do casual check ins! This doesn’t have to be done in a super professional sit down meeting type of conversation. Text them. Ask how they’re doing. It will mean more to them than you think.

✨ Show appreciation! We all know teacher appreciation week is coming up so something I like to do is to hide coupons around the center for them to find.

✨ For their birthdays, they all get a gift, if they go above and beyond one week, we think of something new to do for them. I’ll buy them lunch, get them a gift card, etc. figure out your staffs love language, and do that.

Here are 3 things I wish I knew when I was first opening my center. Hi, my name is Abby and I own a huge childcare center in Pittsburgh with over 350 students and 55 staff.

✨ I knew when I opened a business, I would be working 24/7. This didn’t bother me. I usually worked multiple jobs just to get by. What I didnt realize was the mental load that I carry with me 24/7 which is so much harder than the work itself.

✨ It does not matter what you do, you can’t make everyone happy. I can sit here and tell you all about how great our culture is but that doesn’t mean everyone hops on board with how we do things or sticks around. This industry is so hard and my expectations are high. Let people go. I never want someone in my building that doesn’t want to be there.

✨ How jacked up the industry really is. I knew it was bad; that was the whole reason I created it. But holy moly; its bad bad. I know life is busy and hard enough as it is, but this is an everyone problem. The childcare industry is on the verge of collapse and there is not a single person that wouldn’t be effected in some way if we don’t make some massive changes.

As a teacher, it can be very difficult to track your students milestones and assessments without the right resources.

At our center, we went through a few different assessments for our students, but each time they were always missing something and just didn’t line up with our standards and curriculum.

That’s when we decided to take some time out of our day and go through our curriculum and create our own assessments for all age groups. Parents and teachers are able to see where their children fall developmentally, and parents are able to take a copy home to read over.
