In 2019, I found myself drawn back to a place that had quietly shaped my life — Sporrer’s Barber Garage in Carroll, Iowa. It wasn’t just a barbershop. It was a symbol of persistence. Of legacy. Of craft passed from one generation to the next.

After serving during the Korean War, Duane Sporrer came home and did something timeless — he opened a shop and it was filled with conversation and community. It stood for decades. Through every change, every trend, it was still there.

In August, Duane’s grandson Taylor reached out to me about the photos I took years ago. Duane had passed away. Taylor wanted to revisit those images — moments that had somehow grown more powerful with time.

When I look at those portraits now, I’m reminded of the purpose of photography. It’s not in pixels or products — it’s in people. In spaces that hold stories. In work done with love, humility, and purpose.

That’s what environmental portraiture means to me. It’s about capturing truth — the harmony between a person and the world they’ve shaped.

Some images fade. But the ones that matter — they stay. They remind us who we are, and why we do what we do.
