This week let’s briefly discuss coping skills.

Having good coping skills can help you get through difficult moments, whether you've been dumped by your date or you've had a bad day at work. Coping skills assist you in tolerating, minimizing, and dealing with difficult life situations and difficult emotions. Stress management can improve your physical and psychological well-being, as well as your ability to function at your best.

Two of the various types of coping are Problem-Solving Coping and Emotion-Focused Coping.

Imagine you've been asked to give a talk in front of a huge audience. You accepted the invitation because you were both flattered and shocked. However, because you despise public speaking, your anxiety rises as the event approaches.
Using Problem-solving coping you decide to hire a public speaking coach to help you learn how to compose a good speech and confidently deliver it. You rehearse giving your speech in front of a few friends and family members so that you are more confident when you take the stage.

Using Emotion-focused coping entails convincing yourself that you can handle it. When you start to feel anxious, you perform relaxation exercises. And you remind yourself that no one else in the audience is going to be scared, even if you are.

A key factor of Emotional Intelligence is self-awareness:

When we have the potential to recognize and analyze our sentiments, we can adequately regulate them from the perspective of the circumstance.

Then we will be individuals with a high EQ because it is crucial to our long-term success. As shown in research by PepsiCo, managers with high Emotional Intelligence achieved 15–20 % above yearly expectations.

The benefits and drawbacks of self-awareness are as follows.

We have many positive traits while we have self-awareness, such as:

 We rapidly recognize our strong and weak points.
 We will have a good sense of moral values and purpose
 We have more control over our ideas and actions.

If we do not have self-awareness, there are several adverse effects.

 We are tempted toward being involved in the domain of people-pleasing.
 Justifications are commonly used to avoid discussing brutal reality.
 We don't pay much attention or accept blame for our blunders.

Empathy in Emotional Intelligence

One of the most critical skills associated with social awareness and regulation is Empathy. This is a term everyone likely has heard of and honestly I believe represents one of the least developed skills for the majority of society. I myself worked hard over my lifetime to become more empathetic. My strengths finders ranked it #34 for me back in the day and no its usually in my top 5.

Empathy puts you in the shoes of another person after you recognize their emotions (social Awareness). Empathy isn't about feeling how “you” would feel in that circumstance; it's about standing beside yourself for a few moments and adopting their emotions.

According to some studies, humans succeed at this activity because of mirror neurons, or brain connections that fire whether we are receiving the stimuli or seeing someone else do so.

Mirror neurons are what get your heart pounding when you see athletes running through a stadium at your favorite sporting event or make you recoil in pain when you see an unfortunate incident in a funny viral video.

When people become involved in another person's grief, sadness, or frustration, empathy not only allows us to stand with them and console them with deeper understanding, but also conveys a message that we are prepared to take on an unpleasant emotion so that others do not have to.

Now don’t mistake empathy as an excuse. Empathy does not mean giving people a free pass or not holding them accountable for their actions. It means we have the ability to see the world through their lens to better understand them and their circumstances. It also means the way we respond to the circumstances is typically more compassionate.

The development of empathy allows us to connect with each other on a deeper level, build stronger bonds and develop trust.

What Can You Do to Boost Your Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence can be improved in five ways:

1. Examine Your Emotions: This necessitates self-awareness. Because when a person is conscious of his or her emotions, they will be able to regulate them. Next time you experience and emotion, pause and think about where you feel that emotion. Is it in your face, your hands, your stomach. These are early warning signs you have emotions about to occur and can help with self-regulation.

2. Get a second opinion: What we perceive may not always be accurate. As a result, it's critical to seek feedback from others regarding our emotional conduct at work.

3. Monitor: A person who has a high level of self-awareness must be able to observe their own feelings. Monitor how you respond to various emotions and how others respond to your reactions.

4. Take a Breath: It's critical to develop the habit of thinking twice before saying or doing something. This could aid in the management of our emotions at work. Taking a deep breath over a 7 second period helps you prevent amygdala hijacking which occurs when we have low self regulation. We go from emotion immediately to reaction behavior, bypassing the cortex of the brain where rational thought occurs.

5. Practice, Practice, Practice: As the quote says, practice makes perfect. It is necessary to exercise emotional intelligence to understand its significance. This is feasible if we endeavor to maintain emotional control in all situations by being patient.

Happy Monday everyone....

What are the distractions holding you back from reaching your goals?

I ran across this video from Tyrik Jackson who was speaking with a group of students. He conducts an exercise with them I found very profound.

This exercise demonstrates a great visual example of the distractions in our life that may be holding us back from our goals and our full potential.

I challenge you to take some time this week to consider your goals personal or professional, and consider the distractions that may be holding you back and what actions can you take to remove them in a healthy way?

Have an AWESOME MONDAY!

The Importance of Emotional Intelligence

Emotions are a component of who we are, and the EI quotient is at the center of who we are. EQ enables people to look after their own well-being as well as the well-being of others.

Emotionally intelligent people can inspire and lead others more easily and in unique ways. As a result, they are able to maintain great relationships while aiding others to succeed.

So What Is the Difference Between Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and Emotional Quotient (EQ)?

Your IQ is a measure of your mental talents, such as how well you absorb, comprehend, and apply information. People with higher IQs are better at thinking abstractly and making mental connections.

Emotional intelligence is not the same as IQ. Emotional intelligence, often known as EI (emotional intelligence) or EQ (emotional intelligence quotient), is the ability to think and reason using emotions.

Those with strong emotional intelligence have the ability to be aware of their emotions and those of others and how to navigate the behaviors associated with the emotions.

How emotional intelligence (EQ) is used in everyday life?

There are times in life when you look at someone and think to yourself,

"How is he/she always so in charge of everything?"

Whether it's a coworker who handles difficult work situations calmly or a friend who immediately makes strangers feel at ease.

Every day, you're surrounded by examples of emotional intelligence.

You may even employ emotional intelligence without knowing it to handle everyday events and relationships.

For example you may have a coworker who has been punished by the supervisor, and wishes to express their feelings to you.

You empathize with your colleague before objectively sharing your perspective on why the boss was upset and discussing solutions.

In this example even without formal EQ training we find ourselves practicing many of the basic skills of social awareness and regulation.

Imagine how much better we can be supporting those around us with a little formal training.
