The year everything looked right from the outside.

Good income. Good car. Marine Corps behind him. Three kids. Church called it blessed.

Closed out a bar for his 30th birthday. People he hadn’t heard from in years showed up. Ego welcomed every one of them.

Then came the drive home he doesn’t fully remember.

Wrong side of Cicero Avenue. Headlights straight ahead. Close enough to see the other driver’s eyes before the swerve.

Two thoughts sitting in a parked car after.

First one was about his own kids. Second one was worse.

That man had people waiting up for him too.

Prosperity doesn’t protect the people around you. A steering wheel does.

Gravity doesn’t check church attendance.

A bank balance isn’t a report card with God.

And the entire prosperity framework gets built on one verse. 3 John 1:2. John opening a letter to his friend Gaius the same way anyone texts a friend hoping they’re doing well.

That’s a greeting. Not a doctrine.

A theology of wealth got built on a hello.

1 Timothy 6:10. The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.

Not money. The love of it.

Not the root. A root.

Not all evil. All kinds of evil.

Three changes in one sentence. And when those three words get dropped, what’s left is a verse nobody wrote being used to keep people exactly where they are.

Read the whole chapter before using that verse.

1 Timothy 6:6 isn’t aimed at a man trying to pay his light bill and feed his family. Paul was warning about men who treated godliness like a business. Men who thought gain was the proof of their piety.

That warning got lifted out of context, aimed at working people, and handed to them like a rebuke.

That’s not what Paul wrote. That’s not who he was talking to.

Picked up a book at a church book table after Sunday service. Consumed it. Devoured it. Brought it back to the group.

Nobody wanted to touch it. Changed the subject. Laughed it off.

Except one man.

After a men’s breakfast at Old Country Buffet, Ruddy Ortiz heard something different than everyone else in that room.

Everyone else heard a guy getting too ambitious.

Ruddy heard a man trying to take care of his kids. Trying to make the most of what God gave him.

He didn’t even read the book. He just heard it right.

The word shows up twice in the entire New Testament. Same author. Same word. Two completely different assignments.

First Timothy 6:6. Godliness with contentment is great gain.

Second Corinthians 9:8. God gives you all sufficiency in all things so that you may abound to every good work.

Paul didn’t use contentment as a stopping point. He used it as a launching pad.

The assignment was never to settle. It was to have enough so the work could expand.

Contentment isn’t the finish line. It’s the fuel.

A $12 sandwich. Three kids. A card that might not clear.

That’s not a story about being broke. That’s a story about what it actually takes to finally move.

A five-year-old said she was cold on a Chicago sidewalk in the middle of winter. The car was gone. The train was the only option. And the irritation that came out in that moment wasn’t meant for her.

It was meant for the man who let it get there.

The sandwich cleared. Barely. Split it into pieces. Three kids ate. One bite and some crumbs off the wrapper for the one who was supposed to be providing.

That was grace. Undeserved and undeniable.

But Monday morning came. And instead of spending the commission check that finally arrived on comfort, it went straight back into marketing.

Everyone makes the vow on a hard Sunday.

Almost nobody executes on Monday. That’s the only difference between a bad season and a different life.
