Jason Howton came across this 1973 Big Joe and grabbed a few photos because, more than 50 years later, it’s still on the job.

It’s worn. It’s been worked. It has clearly earned every mark on it.

And it still gets the job done.

More than 1 million TEUs in a single month.

The Port of Los Angeles handled 1,042,652 TEUs in September, making it the busiest month in the Port’s 118-year history. Loaded imports were also up 19% year over year.

And September capped another record: nearly 3 million TEUs moved through the Port from July through September, its busiest quarter ever.

For the material handling community, what happens at the port doesn’t stay at the port.

Those containers move into distribution centers, warehouses and fulfillment operations where teams have to unload, stage, store and move the inventory that comes with them.

Record cargo volumes are a good reminder of just how much depends on the people and equipment keeping goods moving after they leave the dock.

Still think lithium-ion forklifts are weak, slow to charge, and too expensive?

A lot of those assumptions are getting old fast.

Today’s lithium-ion forklifts can deliver consistent power through the shift, take advantage of opportunity charging during normal downtime, and support longer operating schedules when the truck and charging strategy are matched to the application.

And when it comes to cost, the sticker price is only part of the story. Fuel, oil, coolant, exhaust-system maintenance, and battery maintenance can all change the total cost equation.

That doesn’t mean electric is the right fit for every operation.

But it does mean it’s worth separating what was true years ago from what’s true now.

He’s four months old, one month into the job, and already taken on an important role:

His current responsibilities include greeting the team, sitting in on meetings, making surprise appearances around the office, and naturally attracting more attention than the rest of us.

His equipment knowledge is still, well, a work in progress.

His ability to win people over? Already strong.

There are a lot of personalities behind Big Joe California, and Joey is quickly becoming one of the favorites.

Manufacturing doesn’t stop at the production line.

Before something becomes a finished product, materials have to be unloaded, moved, staged, stored, and brought exactly where they’re needed.

Then the finished product has to move all over again.

A lot of that work happens behind the scenes.

Forklift operators. Warehouse teams. Technicians. Shipping crews. And the equipment keeping materials moving from one part of the operation to the next.

That’s the side of manufacturing we get to see every day.

Sometimes a demo is less about proving the truck and more about seeing how it fits the bigger goal.

Brett recently brought an LPE50 out for a demo at a college that’s actively working toward its sustainability goals.

One feature that stood out right away was the on-board charger.

For an operation like this, that flexibility matters. Instead of being tied to a dedicated charging setup, the truck can be plugged in where it makes sense for the facility and the workflow.

That gives the team a chance to look at electrification without overcomplicating the transition.

Mickey spotted this setup while out in Oxnard visiting local businesses.

The company had been running propane and recently added another propane forklift because it was what they already knew.

Nothing wrong with that.

What stood out was that lithium was never part of the conversation.

Sometimes propane is still the right fit. Sometimes electric or lithium makes more sense.

Quality at Big Joe California means the equipment, the service behind it, and the people doing the work.

This is Domingo, one of the newest technicians on our service team, working through preventative maintenance on a Big Joe J1-126 at a customer site in Gardena.

He’s spending his first four weeks training alongside Emmanuel before heading out in his own service van.

Preventative maintenance takes more than following a checklist. It takes knowing the equipment, understanding where wear shows up, and developing the eye to catch something before it becomes downtime.

That kind of craftsmanship is built in the field.

We put the same care into developing our people that we expect from the equipment we put into our customers’ operations: time, attention to detail, and doing the job right.

Domingo is building that foundation one service call at a time.

Some dates never become ordinary.

September 11 is one of them.

Twenty-five years later, the images still stop you.

The skyline. The smoke. The sirens. The faces of people running toward danger while others searched for a way out.

But what remains just as clearly is the courage that followed.

First responders who kept going.
Strangers who helped strangers.
Families who carried loss forward.
A country that stood together in a moment none of us would ever forget.

Today, Big Joe California remembers the lives lost, honor the heroes, and hold space for everyone forever changed by that day.
