When you are 94 and have worked thousands of cattle, you graduate to keeping all the records on spring processing/AI day. Thanks, Dad!

We have many bull buyers that sell butcher beef/freezer beef/farm fresh beef (you know what I’m talking about). Learn how others market their product. We have customers making a significant profit from doing this. The public wants high quality, local beef and we want to help you sell more cattle through this channel.

We have a lot happening on sale day. Don’t miss our seminar “From Farm to Fork and Everything in Between.” We will have a panel discussion looking at the butcher beef business; the challenges faced and success stories from a few that have really grown their business.

Spegal's Prime Cuts is a local bucther shop, retail store, and restaurant owned by Gregg and Amy Spegal in Shelbyville, IN. The Spegal’s have been long time red poll breeders focusing on carcass quality and grass efficiency and selling beef off the farm and at farmer’s markets. They decided to take this a step further and open their own butcher shop where they provide fresh cuts from their own beef herd along with with marketing other locally raised meat products. Since opening they have added products to their offering along with daily lunch specials and monthly dinners.

Gregg and Amy have all kinds of experience from dealing directly with customers ordering bulk beef, to managing inventories while running a meat counter and restaurant, to managing employees inside a butcher beef business.

Commercial bred heifers are averaging $4500 all across the country. Most of these heifers are of unknown genetics and are bred to “low birthweight” bulls.

Knowing this, what would a crossbred heifer that is from a proven sire from Midwest Beef Cattle Consultants, is genomically tested for 18 traits, has passed our genetic and docility requirements to be in our sale worth? Would she also be worth more if she was bred AI or naturally to a true calving ease bull?

Want to have moderate framed, low-maintenance, docile, highly fertile females that are still in the herd for 10, 12 or even 15 years? If so, it is time to INVEST in genetics that work for you and not the other way around.

In addition to 20 bulls, we have 22 females for sale at our fall bull and female sale, Saturday, November 8 at Carthage, IN. Females are registered and commercial Balancers, Gelbvieh-Angus-Simmental and 4-way composites. Spring breds and fall pairs to sell.

As we approach our 6th annual fall bull and female sale on November 8, this fact sheet from the beef geneticists at eBEEF.org should be quite helpful. They present numerous breeding goals and notice how often the objective includes the phrase, "Crossbreeding".

This is a great opportunity to learn about the science that goes into determining how these indexes are developed. I am on the AGA breed improvement committee and it has been a great learning experience.

All AGA members and commercial cattlemen are invited to attend a webinar hosted by Dr. Bob Weaber, AGA genetics consultant, on September 23, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. CST. The webinar will provide more information about each index and EPD, as well as guidance on how to utilize them in various production scenarios.

One of the joys of my career has been to see so many young veterinarians that I was fortunate enough to teach go out into the world and make a positive impact. I reserve the term “Superstar” for the best of the best and all you have to do is ask Dr Kayla Clark’s clients to comment on her diagnostic, medical and surgical skills along with her ability to communicate effectively. She was one of the best ever to ride in truck #3 at Purdue and her clients are very fortunate to have her as their herd health veterinarian.

Seeking a docile Balancer bull that will produce a superior set of replacement females? Take a look at BRCC 49M. He is homozygous black and homozygous polled, DNA tested, semen checked, and ready to breed cows. He is top 30% or better for WW, YW, CEM, marbling, and stayability (prediction of daughter longevity). Keep the heifers and feed out the steers.

Here are a group of 7-8 month old calves. What do you think? Are they consistent enough? After over 40 years of research showing that using composite bulls on crossbred cows IMPROVES the consistency of the calves, I still hear from producers that believe the opposite. These calves were born in a 60 day window all out of a Balancer bull from MBCC. The owner in North Carolina has told me the calves out of this bull are the best they’ve ever had. Need a new bull?
