“We met Israa as a newly minted coach while presenting Team Advantage certification course in Florida and fell in love with her. When she moved to Yuma Regional Medical Center, she opted to take the full certification course through HCI. What a contribution - - her insights into human nature allow Israa to see others as Whole, Creative and Resourceful. A keen observer of others, and an intuitive coach and lifelong learner, we are so happy to be traveling in stride with this ray of sunshine!” DJ Mitsch, Founder, HCI

Our Healthcare Coaching Institute Feature Friday interview is with Israa Khan, Coach and Organizational Development Leader.

My mentor joined HCI while I was still early in my career. She shared her experience with me and I witnessed her personal transformation and grow into a phenomenal coach.

I knew I was being called to coach and HCI provided an immersive program. It wasn’t until 5+ years later that I took the leap to follow in her footsteps with HCI after I attended a webinar.

The most significant perspective shift is the belief that people are creative, resourceful, and whole. When I began embodying this belief, my coaching practice blossomed. I moved from the head to the heart and gut and stopped “fixing”. It is amazing to witness real transformation in clients when we trust them and hold space for them to play safely.

The more my practice grows in size and complexity, it remains critical to ground myself and hold space for exploration and partnership.

For others considering coach training: We must know ourselves, our blind spots, and our gifts as we enter sacred space with our clients. HCI offers a journey that comprehensively prepares us to coach fully. Tactical skills will only take us so far. Many programs out there strive to arm us with steps and tools to coach. However, this profession demands much more of us and our clients deserve more too.

Our Feature Friday is on Bryan Downey who is a newly credentialed coach through the International Coaching Federation. Bryan selected the professional coach or PCC level track of the Healthcare Coaching Institute because it offers a diverse cohort of healthcare professionals.

"I want to thank my clients for trusting in me. And thanks to Darelyn DJ Mitsch, CEO, MCC, Marcia Reynolds, PsyD, MCC, Janet Crawford, PCC, Tim Link MA, MCC, Bobbi Gemma, and Mark Greenawald and all of the faculty for mentoring me on this journey. It wasn't easy, but it was worth it!" Bryan Downey

The first time I met Bryan he was his leadership role for a large pharma company and I worked with his leadership teams thereafter. When he sought a career change, he called me to explore what coaching could mean for someone like him who ran international upstarts and bio pharma organizations. Like other CEOs, there is a desire for building legacies and looking beyond one industry for impact, especially in life sciences. I was thrilled he enrolled and he was a contribution to his cohort and will continue to be a contribution to all leaders who engage him as coach! ~ Darelyn "DJ" Mitsch, CEO, MCC

The Healthcare Coaching Institute (HCI) offered Bryan the tools and safety he needed to transform his executive career. “Healthcare in the United States is complicated and in need of restructuring. The system was already stressed and the pressure from COVID related issues brought more stress to the forefront. The HCI allowed a safe place to talk about the issues and to help determine what’s working and what’s not,” said Bryan.

HCI was the right choice for Bryan, who is now coaching full time.

On Fridays, we are featuring leaders who chose the Healthcare Coaching Institute. Today, it's great to share the Friday Feature interview with Dr. Christy Arthur who said, "I chose Healthcare Coaching Institute for the faculty--there is great diversity of interest and expertise, and it led to a well-rounded coach training experience. The healthcare specific coaches a compassionate peek behind the curtain and mystique of the healthcare industry to help the coaching cohort better understand the difficulties, and possibilities that exist for those in that industry.

Coaching is a brilliant tool for helping young physicians establish healthy boundaries and foundations so they can thrive and live into their calling. The more thriving doctors, the stronger the organization. And that means a much happier workplace, better patient outcomes and financial success for the healthcare system. Coaching has transformed the way I practice medicine, and the way I lead my team. First, coaching allowed me to see that everyone deserves the assumption that they are creative, resourceful and whole, including my patients. When we learned about the archetypes, I found that I was taking on the role of "mother" in my office, and I was taking on too much responsibility. That change in perspective allowed me to give others the space to solve the problems, and using deep coach listening allowed me to pause rather than react, and to guide my co-workers and support staff to their highest truth as well. "

Thank you Dr. Arthur for sharing your HCI experience with us!

"When a physician comes to us seeking an immediate life and a career change, we take that seriously, and hold them as kindred spirits on a mission. Dr. Shana A. Crabtree, MD HealthCare Coach, – a pediatrician - was ripe for a new pathway to continue impacting the world around her, and beyond medicine. She landed well. A dog momma and lover of life, Shana is now coaching full time, including using Pyramid Resource Group’s Team Advantage program to guide teams to achieve extraordinary results. Shana is a light, illuminating paths wherever she goes," Darelyn DJ Mitsch, CEO MCC.

Read more in our HCI Friday Feature interview with Dr. Crabtree:
I chose Healthcare Coaching Institute because it was highly recommended by fellow colleagues and changed my life-- personally and professionally. HCI helped me to figure out who I am and who I want to be and how to bridge that gap.

Coaching has changed the way I interact with everyone both personally and professionally. I see other people in a different nonjudgmental light. I am much more aware of the meanings of my words and the impact they have on others. Instead of dictating answers, I now prefer to ask questions to help the person I am talking to figure out how to answer their own questions, and more importantly how to grow and transform on their own. This has been a positive change in the leadership class that I help coach to the automotive industry.

Life is even more amazing thanks to HCI. Now I am running the Crabtree Family Foundation, co-coaching a leadership course for Pohanka Automotive, and own an LLC coaching business. I am renovating the Lasater Millhouse and just started my own beehives this week. I am no longer afraid of public speaking and recently spoke at an event for Women Leading with Heart for Children's Home Society.

“Cherri Hobgood, M.D. is a gifted healer, a gardener and a voice for women. Her coaching style is direct and she challenges convention. Cherri added an element of fun to every classroom engagement at HCI. One of my favorite quotes from Cherri was a metaphor, “I use every type of flower in my arrangements, even the weeds! Weeds make a bouquet more interesting!” Darelyn "DJ" Mitsch, CEO, MCC

More on our Feature Friday interview with Dr. Cherri Hobgood, Founder The Center for Leadership Life:

“I chose the Healthcare Coaching Institute because of my work and being acutely aware of the need for accelerated transformation in healthcare. The results of my study on Barriers, Challenges, and Solutions” demonstrates that women who are in leadership roles are more successful with coaching support,” Dr. Cherri Hobgood.

Dr. Hobgood completed a multi-year study “Barriers, Challenges, and Solutions” on women leaders in academic medicine who are facing unique challenges, many of which originate from social expectations and the organizational culture of academic medicine. The end result of the study showed the power of coaching to be transformational. It was at this point that Dr. Hobgood began searching for a Healthcare Coaching program and chose HCI because of the vast experience of the coaches, flexibility of the schedule as well as robust curriculum.

Since completing the HCI program, Dr. Hobgood has changed gears to become a full-time coach in leadership development space. “Coaching helps provide a different mindset that offers support and someone who understands the healthcare environment and offers solutions that fit long-term success that keeps you going.”

Our amazing Darelyn "DJ" Mitsch, CEO, MCC is a pioneer in the business coaching field and was one of the first 25 business coaches in the US to earn a Master Certified Coach designation from the International Coaching Federation (ICF). She is past president of ICF and was responsible for driving the global initiatives to create the chapters and international representation on the Board. In 1994, DJ founded the first-of-its-kind coaching company, The Pyramid Resource Group, Inc., with her life partner Barry Mitsch. Together with a team of masterful coaches, they have served international, national and local organizations in a variety of industries.

For Women's History Month, DJ shared a little about her mentor Sheila Ogle.

"Every leader needs a mentor like mine - visionary, savvy, supportive, experienced, brave, loving and fierce!

Sheila Hale Ogle was a media director when I started a career in broadcast sales over 40 years ago. She asked the tough questions, and she was compassionate and patient with me as I navigated a steep learning curve about such things as audience ratings and qualitative data. Fast forward through the decades and you'll hear stories of how I watched her build seven businesses, calling her frequently to have a big girl lunch to discuss my biggest challenges as she shared her just in time lessons. She became a best friend long ago and I trust her forever to have my back, to promote my work, to host gal pal parties, and to love me whatever the situation. Here are some key things I learned from Sheila.

~ The most powerful contribution on any Board of Directors is a great question.

~ Boundaries are critical for letting someone know where you draw the line.

~Prayer and trusting your inner compass is essential for succeeding in business as an entrepreneur.

~ So is a belly laugh - especially if you fall on your face, say something stupid in front of an audience, or need to disarm those who try to diminish or threaten you.

~ Banana pudding is a cure-all!"

Thank you DJ for always lifting and encouraging others!

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared stress an epidemic before the pandemic, and now leaders are stressed more than ever. This challenges their coachability and their ability to trust or connect, keep healthy perspectives, or creatively consider possibilities. We will explore the neuroscience of stress and how that relates to coachability, how to help you and them assess the role of stress, how to maintain your presence and encourage theirs, and how to help them access their brilliance and resilience under duress.

Our Feature Friday is on Dr. Bryant Murphy. “Bryant Murphy is a highly rated Anesthesiologist and Faculty Member for University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. A dedicated physician leader, Bryant inspired our entire faculty as he carved out time for the rigorous HCI program as a platform for developing a new culture of coaching at UNC SOM. He has earned Level Two certification through HCI and applicant for ICF ACC at this time. We believe Bryant’s voice is one that will help shape coaching in healthcare - - as he represents a host of physician leaders who care deeply about the impact of coaching in their work,” Darelyn "DJ" Mitsch, CEO, MCC.

Read The Pyramid Resource Group, Inc. Friday Feature interview with Dr. Murphy:

When looking at Coaching programs, I was impressed with HCI and their approach to coach training geared specifically to healthcare. While the basic principles of coaching are applicable to any field, there are some nuances to coaching healthcare leaders, and this program focused on that need.

Coach training was extremely valuable to me also in my leadership journey. I learned more about myself during this process than I imagined I would. This knowledge will help me to be a much better coach to the clients that I will work with.

I am currently the director of the UNC School of Medicine Coaching Academy. This role has allowed me to work to change the culture of coaching at our institution. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that everyone in our organization who wants a coach can have access to one.

Coaching is a valuable leadership development tool that is underutilized. After coming through the recent pandemic and social justice issues, healthcare workers are tired, burned-out, and looking for ways to improve and grow. Coaching is a valuable tool that can help them.
