๐˜๐š๐ฏ๐š๐ฉ๐š๐ข ๐‚๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ๐ฒ, ๐€๐™ - On June 26, Yavapai County Sheriffโ€™s Office deputies responded to a fraud report in the Verde Valley, where a woman in her 50s was scammed out of $4.3 million.

It's easy to assume this could never happen to you, but this victimโ€™s story serves as a critical warning. These criminals are highly sophisticated, and this incident proves that even the most astute members of our community can fall prey to their manipulation.

Over the course of two months, fraudsters posing as FBI agents and New York Police Department (NYPD) officers targeted the victim through a series of elaborate threats. Using spoofed phone numbers and emails, they claimed someone had attempted to purchase fi****ms in her name using a Chase Bank credit card in New York, and that she was now implicated in a federal money-laundering investigation.

To isolate the victim, the thieves told her she was under digital surveillance and threatened severe repercussions if she spoke to anyone. The criminals utilized terrifying tactics to convince her to cooperate, sending fabricated paper documents that closely mirrored official FBI records, hosting online Microsoft Teams meetings with the fake officials (who kept their cameras off to hide their faces), demanding she transfer funds through a Bitcoin application, claiming the money needed to be "scanned" to prove her innocence.

After sending over $4.3 million via cryptocurrency, she came forward to report the incident to law enforcement.

Deputies immediately launched an investigation to gather evidence and track the culprits. Unfortunately, because the funds were transferred via cryptocurrency and rapidly moved through multiple accounts, the money could not be recovered. The IP addresses, spoofed phone numbers, and emails all led to dead ends.

Please remain vigilant and warn your family members and loved ones. These criminals are extremely persuasive and are trained to manipulate individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

Law enforcement will NEVER ask for money over the phone. NEVER send cryptocurrency to people you do not know, no matter how much they threaten or pressure you.

If you receive a suspicious call from someone claiming to be law enforcement, hang up and independently contact the agency directly using a verified, public phone number.
