✨ Time Traveling Through the Sonoran Desert at Nicole's Little Academy! ✨

What an epic week of adventure! Our fearless co-pilots Theo and Juniper safely navigated our flight straight back to Arizona, landing us right in the historic heart of the ancient Huhugam world.
For those curious about our incredible historical hosts, the Huhugam (pronounced who-who-am!), often translated as "The Ones Who Came Before," are world famous master engineers of the desert. They built an astonishing, miles long network of irrigation canals that turned the dry desert soil into thriving agricultural fields long before modern machinery ever existed.
Our little learners stepped right into that rich history with some amazing hands on learning stations:

Yucca Weaving & Numbers: We watched women weave traditional cordage from yucca plant leaves, restocked them with prepared rope, and used it to practice counting.

Color Sorting: We mastered our colors by sorting vibrant bundles of colored yucca leaves.
Corn Grinding & Math: We visited a traditional metate station to grind corn and practice counting numbered corn kernels.

Prickly Pear Shape Practice: We collected desert fruit to fill our basket drop-pockets while working on our shapes.

Our Weekly Learning Lineup:
Letter Focus (Dot Markers): M is for Mesquite, P is for Prickly Pear, H is for Huhugam (the ones who came before us), and S is for Saguaro.

Storytime Favorites: Up and Down in the Dirt, Cactus Hotel, Fry Bread, and Way Out in the Desert.

Scissor Skills: Precision cutting practice featuring metates, prickly pear cacti, and historic Huhugam scenes.

Creative Crafts: The kids handcrafted coyote headbands, adorable quail crafts, painted clay bowls using authentic yucca plant paint brushes, and built their very own bobcat puppets.

Extended our Mexican adventure for a second magical week, diving headfirst into the vibrant colors and traditions of Día de los Mu***os! 💀 marigolds, music, and way too much Coco made for an unforgettable ride.
We kicked things off with some incredible reads: Cactus Soup, Celebrate the World: Día de los Mu***os, Living in Mexico, and Let’s Celebrate Día de los Mu***os.
Our fine motor practice and crafts were packed with culture and creativity:
Cut & Color: Butterflies, marigolds, candles, and pan de mu**to.
Dot Marker Practice: C is for Cempasúchil (marigold), O is for Ofrenda, V is for Vela (candle), and P is for Pan de Mu**to.
Crafts & Activities: We built a skeleton musician and a folkloric dancer, crafted an alebrije mobile, and designed custom sugar skulls.
We kept our hands busy all week long building our learning around our classroom ofrenda adding lettered pan de mu**to on Monday, colored picture frames on Tuesday, and numbered candles into our Catrina scene with her alebrije cat. By Thursday, the kids took the reins, steering the ship and requesting a rotation of their favorite hands on activities. Naturally, we spent the whole week playing, singing, dancing, and watching Coco on an absolute loop by popular demand! 😅
That officially wraps up our journey through Mexico. Next week, we’re stepping back in time to explore the ancient Hohokam people ( also known as the Sonoran Desert People) and taking a field trip right in our backyard to explore the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument! 🏛️✨

Outdoor temps were scorching this week, so we packed our bags, escaped the heat, and took our imaginations straight to Mexico! ✈️🇲🇽

Our adventure started Monday when we boarded our airplane, flown safely to our destination thanks to Captain Theo! Once we touched down, we grabbed our luggage and hopped aboard our tour bus to explore the vibrant sights, sounds, and traditions of Mexico, including a front row seat to some incredible folklorico dancers. 🎶💃

Our Travel Adventures & Early Learning Fun:
Storytime Reads: Green Is a Chile Pepper, Off We Go to Mexico!, and Say Hello! 📚

Shapes & Papel Picado: Identified geometric shapes tucked inside traditional papel picado banners and hung them up across our plaza.
Floral Colors: Matched bright, colorful floral blooms to the flowing dresses of our folklorico dancers.

Dance Step Counting: Practiced number recognition by sequencing the correct footwork patterns so our dancers never missed a beat! 🩰🔢

Dot Marker & Fine Motor: Explored letters M (for Mexico), A (for Alebrije), and F (for Folklorico).
Cutting Skills: Practiced scissor control by coloring and cutting out dancer figures and delicate banner patterns.

Creative Crafts: Created custom name sombreros, moving folklorico dancer puppets, and 3D Mexico scenery pop up dioramas! 🎨✨
It was a week full of culture, music, laughs, and big discoveries, all without breaking a sweat in the summer sun! ❤️☀️

🏔️ Wrapping Up an Epic Week in Alaska! 🐻❄️
What an unforgettable journey through the Last Frontier! Even though it is Friday and we are racing to the finish line, we couldn’t let the week end without sharing all the incredible adventures our little explorers tackled.
Here is a look back at how we explored Alaska together:

Wednesday — Colors, Canines, & Crafting: We kicked things off reading Goodnight Alaska. Since Juniper is a total pro at her colors, she stepped up to be our superstar Teacher's Assistant for the day! She helped our friends match up the correct colored squid, then we dove into our S is for Seal dot marker pages, tackled dog sled cutting practice, and created a traditional Alaskan Inuit craft.
Thursday — Wildlife & Wilderness: We journeyed deeper into the frozen wild reading Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You See? Our math skills soared as we practiced numbers by tracking down numbered fish chased by our friendly puffin. From there, we mastered O is for Orca dot markers, built precision with our wolf cutting practice, and topped it all off by crafting our very own snow owl hats!
🌵 Next up... ¡Vámonos a México! ☀️🪅
Get ready, because next week we are trading our snow gear for vibrant colors, rich culture, and warm sunshine as we kick off our Mexico unit! Stay tuned for all the fun

🏔️ NEXT STOP: ALASKA! 🛩️❄️
Since one of our very own dads is from Alaska, we just had to add the Last Frontier to our travel itinerary!
Our week started with Co Captain Juniper landing us safely on the runway. Once the bags were unloaded, Juniper traded her pilot wings for a tour bus steering wheel to take us sightseeing through Alaska’s breathtaking wilderness! 🚌🌲
Here is a look at the first half of our arctic adventure:
🌿 Monday: Moose Spotting & Arctic Scenes
We kicked off the trip looking for wildlife! While watching a moose munching on water grass, we practiced letter identification, Juniper tackled lowercase letters like a pro, while our younger explorers worked on uppercase matching! We read Mama, Do You Love Me?, created an “A is for Alaska” dot marker page, used our scissor skills to cut out arctic foxes, and built a 3D arctic forest scene! 🦊❄️

🫐 Tuesday: Bear Berries & Narwhal Crafts
We started the morning with free play Alaska coloring, then settled in for story time with 10 on the Sled. Next up: spotting a giant brown bear eating berries! We helped identify the shapes of the berries on the bushes, practiced fine motor skills with an “N is for Narwhal” dot marker activity, cut out polar bears, and crafted our very own narwhals! 🐻🐋
We still have two more days left in the Alaskan wilderness before we pack our bags for Mexico and then head home to explore Arizona! Stay tuned to see where our tour bus takes us next! ✈️🇲🇽🌵

🌺 Aloha, Little Adventurers! 🌺
What an incredible week exploring the islands of Hawaii! We packed so much hands on learning into our days, diving deep into Polynesian culture, art, and history.
Here is a look at what our little explorers experienced! 🏝️✨

Tuesday:
We kicked off our trip reading Goodnight Hawaii before turning into real color scientists! The children explored traditional natural dyes used across Polynesia by matching and practicing colors with plant and food representations. We focused on fine motor skills using dot markers for "L is for Lei," created custom colored leis with cutting practice, and finished the day crafting colorful Hawaiian wind socks! 🎨🎏

Wednesday:
After reading Pete at the Beach, we took on a special literacy quest! The children practiced letter matching by adding Ki’i carvings right next to the thatched hut on our interactive island map. Fine motor time included a "K is for Ki’i" worksheet, Ki’i cutting practice, and designing personalized surfboard name crafts! 🏄‍♂️🗿

Thursday:
We opened our morning with Bluey: The Beach and jumped into math with a Polynesian twist! The kids matched numbered canoe paddles to build up their paddle piles by the shore. We tackled "W is for Wa’a" (canoe) dot marker art and practiced scissor skills with a volcano cutting activity. For our hands on grand finale, we stepped into the shoes of ancient islanders to make natural dye! The children mashed real blackberries together and dyed washcloths a rich, beautiful purple shade, hanging them out to dry just like traditional fabric artisans. 🍇🧺
We had an absolute blast immersing ourselves in Hawaiian tradition and natural beauty! Next stop on our adventure board: Alaska! ❄️🏔️

🌺 Aloha from Paradise! ✈️🌴
Pack your bags and grab your sunhats! Our little explorers took flight to Hawaii today!
Guided by the unmatched skills of Captain Juniper in the cockpit, we soared high into the sky before touching down on the island. Once on land, Tour Bus Driver Juniper took the wheel, navigating us around the tropical paradise so we could soak in the stunning sights and watch authentic hula dancing! 🚌✨
🌴 Journeying into Ancestral Hawaii
We stepped back in time to explore the rich history of the islands! The crew learned all about how ancient Polynesians created natural paints, stamped intricate patterns, and wove sturdy mats and blankets using tree bark. 🎨📜
Shape Matching in Paradise: We put our sharp math skills to work by identifying geometric shapes directly on our woven mats and hanging them up to dry!
Storytime: We snuggled up on our stump cushions to read Froggy Goes to Hawaii! 📖🐸
🎨 Craft Corner & Hands On Learning
We wrapped up our tropical expedition with plenty of hands-on creativity:
"H" is for Hawaii! A gorgeous dot marker activity celebrating our letter of the day. 🌺
Hula Dancers: Fine motor skill practice in action coloring and carefully cutting out our very own hula dancers! ✂️💃
Palm Tree Hats: Making tropical headwear to complete our island wardrobe! 🌴🎩
What an unforgettable journey to start our week! Where will our imagination take us next? ✈️🌊

✈️ PACK YOUR BAGS! We took off to PUERTO RICO this week! 🇵🇷✨
One of our kiddos' moms is from Puerto Rico, so of course, we had to add it to our travel itinerary! Co-Captain Juniper flew us in safe and sound on Monday, then took over as our official tour bus driver! 🚌💨
Here’s a peek at our week packed with culture, crafts, and learning:

✈️ Monday: We took off, read ¡Hola! Puerto Rico, and practiced shapes by stocking our kite stand. We finished the day with cutting practice and built the absolute cutest 3D Puerto Rican home scene! 🏠
🍧 Tuesday: We read Juan Bobo Goes to Work and stocked our snow cone stand with colorful syrup bottles to practice color matching! We learned that "Piragua" is Spanish for snow cone, made our own maracas, and ended the day with a full on dance party! 🪇💃
🐸 Wednesday: A trip into the El Yunque National Forest! We read Coquí in the City, practiced letters by placing coquí frogs into the rainforest, and crafted our very own adorable coquí frogs! 🌿
