Does your after-school program need a child care license? In most states, four facts decide it.

1. Who runs it. Several states exempt programs run by a school district or local government, and the wording differs by state.
2. How long it runs, in hours a day and weeks a year.
3. Whether it offers one activity, like a sports league, or general supervision.
4. Whether children can come and go on their own.

Federal funding runs through December 11, and final FY2027 numbers probably won’t arrive before mid-December.

That timing comes from AESA’s Sept 8 appropriations update. If your after-school or 21st CCLC program depends on that money, three moves help most this month. Write the flat funding plan down. Build a second version at a cut and rank what goes first. Then book the decision meeting for the week after December 11.
