If you run an after-school or summer program, this one is for you.

On September 1 we opened our Education and EdTech Grants Database to everyone. It is free, and there is nothing to buy on the other side of it.

Here is the problem it solves. Funding for K-12 and out-of-school time programs is scattered across Grants.gov, SAM.gov, the Federal Register, fifty state education agency websites and a long list of foundations that post to nowhere but their own pages. Checking all of that every week is a job. You already have one.

So the board checks for you, every day, and puts it in one list you can filter by deadline, category and who is eligible.

Right now it holds 76 open opportunities. Eleven of them are written specifically for after-school and 21st CCLC programs. Fifteen come from foundations you would never find on a federal site.

School starts this week for most districts nationwide.

Three things the highest-performing program directors we work with do differently in the first two weeks:

They do not wait for something to break before scheduling a review. They schedule it in advance and protect it.

They communicate their fall operations plan to staff in writing before the first day, not in the first staff meeting.

They identify the two or three specific metrics they will use to assess program health in October, and build the data collection for those metrics now.

The school year is not the planning phase. August is.

he AI conversation in K-12 changed this year.

It is no longer "should we allow AI tools." 85% of teachers are already using them.

The question now is whether your district has the policy infrastructure to govern those tools, the training to support them, and the documentation practices to protect students when something goes wrong.

The districts doing this well built their frameworks before the school year started. The ones doing it under pressure are doing it in reaction mode.

Last year, a 21st CCLC coordinator submitted her renewal application with three years of tracked outcome data.

The year before that, she had the outcomes. She just had not built the system to capture them.

One year of documentation infrastructure made her renewal application take half the time it had taken previously. The data was already organized when October came.

The work of building that infrastructure happens in the summer, not during the renewal cycle. If your program ran OST this year and the outcomes are not yet documented, August is the last good window.

AI tools are already in your district. Less than half the staff using them got any training first.

The compliance frameworks are coming from states this year. The districts that built their AI governance policies now will be ready. The ones that waited will spend the 2026–2027 school year retrofitting.

Six things a real AI acceptable use policy covers:
1. What tools are permitted on district devices and networks
2. Who approves new tool additions
3. What student data may not be used with AI systems
4. How training happens before deployment, not after
5. What disclosure looks like when AI assists in student-facing content
6. Where human review is never optional

The FY2027 House bill cuts the Education Department budget by 10%, including a $1.89 billion Title I reduction. Afterschool (21st CCLC) was maintained.

The Senate has not moved. The final number is months away.

Every district and OST program should be running two budget scenarios right now: one at current funding, one at a 10% Title I reduction. Not because the cut is certain. Because planning for only one scenario when the process is this uncertain is a bet your students and staff cannot afford you to lose.

There are 22.6 million children without access to afterschool programs.

Parents of nearly 30 million children want those programs. The capacity does not exist to serve them.

The programs that exist right now, the ones running this fall, are not just providing childcare. They are the reason some students experience enrichment, academic support, and structure that the school day cannot always provide.

The work of running those programs well is not abstract. It is scheduling, staffing, curriculum, data documentation, and partnership management. It is operations work. And it matters.
