Liz Moran’s article “The Cayuga Lake Modeling Project: Tools for Ecosystem-based Management” is published in ClearWaters magazine’s new issue about the Finger Lakes. Liz explains how an interdisciplinary team at Cornell developed mathematical models to support science-based, long-term protection of Cayuga Lake. The project draws on expertise in watershed management, lake water quality, and hydrodynamics to deepen our understanding of processes affecting the lake’s health. Liz Moran is coauthor of a new article on alum treatments in Cape Cod kettle ponds published in the journal Lake and Reservoir Management. EcoLogic has worked with the Town of Eastham, MA, to protect and restore several kettle ponds that were showing signs of phosphorus over-enrichment. Liz attended graduate school at Cornell University with two of the article’s coauthors, Kenneth Wagner and David Mitchell.

Lake Source Cooling is “a system that addresses a global issue, climate change, and acts locally to solve it,” explains Lanny Joyce, Cornell University’s director of utilities and energy management. EcoLogic has worked closely with Cornell’s engineers on this innovative project to tap into Cayuga Lake's deep, cold waters as a renewable resource for campus cooling.

EcoLogic scientists Kurt Jirka and Eileen Randall participated in a meeting on freshwater mussels of the St. Lawrence River region in northern New York. Professionals who gathered at this event (hosted by the NYS Museum in Albany last week) discussed the distribution of native mussel species, current genetic studies, mussel identification, and the future of freshwater mussel research and restoration in the region.
